Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Augustus Hoppin Ilustrador. Illustrated Edition. This is the 1886 trade edition of "Backlog Studies", a volume of genial essays and light fictional conversations by Charles Dudley Warner. The book was issued by Houghton Mifflin in Boston. This particular copy was deaccessioned from an old library, and is dressed in a contemporary library binding of finely ribbed, dark green cloth. This edition has all of the 21 illustrations by Augustus Hoppin, which capture very nicely the genial humor of the text. Charles Dudley Warner was an essayist and the author of lshort stories, essays, and novels. In Backlog Studies" there are 11 'Studies' in all, many of which are, in reality, fictional conversations. One of them even broaches the topic of the supernatural, or uncanny sightings. Warner was very popular in his day. A close friend of Mark Twain, Warner co-authored "The Gilded Age, A Story of Today" with Twain. "Backlog Studies" was a very popular volume, going through many printings. This is the 18th Printing. The illustrator, Augustus Hoppin, was a successful illustrator who produced wood cuts, and contributed to magazines and as well as doing work for books. His illustrations for Oliver Wendell Holmes' "The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table" are widely known. The pictures for "Backlog Studies" are less well known, but are equally deft and produce a well-fitted accompaniment to the stories. TITLE : Backlog Studies. AUTHOR : Charles Dudley Warner (1829 - 1900). ILLUSTRATIONS : Augustus Hoppin (1828 - 1896). IMPRINT : Houghton Mifflin and Co. PLACE : Boston. DATE : 1886. EDITION : 18th Printing [title page states 'edition', but what the publisher is referring to is obviously printings] . DETAILS : Small trade hardcover; Contains numerous engraved illustrations, including a frontispiece, and line vignettes; 281 pages; approximately 4 7/8" x 6 1/2", dark green finely-ribbed cloth-covered boards with title, etc. lettered in gilt on spine. CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS ONLY -- This is a deaccessioned library book which, which has also had private ownership, and which remains solid and serviceable, with the following imperfections and particulars noted: This copy has been well-read, with quite a few finger smudges and minute spots through the text, but, for the most part displays nicely, and is quite serviceable. It is an X-Library Volume, but such a designation does not denote a condition in itself, but a provenance That being said --- this particular copy has seen considerable use (not rough use) and displays the effects of that use. EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are slightly compressed and display modest abrasion; boards are modestly rubbed; text-block edges are toned but clean. BINDING : Solid. there is a slight lean to the front. It is obvious that the book has been read and thus not so tight as when issued, the text-block being shaken, however, no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR : There is a considerable amount of finger smudging throughout the book, there are, as well, scattered small spots and a few small edge tears. This is an x-library book which saw considerable use during its library stint, but which remains serviceable and waiting for a new owner who will recognize its charm and connection to a distant past, and its age of 140 years.
