Thornycroft from his father, Xmas, 1916. Profusely illustrated with coloured plates, photogravure plates and black and white plates… throughout. Top edges gilt. Some foxing in places. Bound in the publishers full red morocco with red marbled endpapers, raised bands and heavy gilt decoration. The front inner hinge is slightly cracked, only marbled paper. The edges are rubbed and there is what looks like and ink stain to the lower part of the spine. Generally a very good copy of this magnificent production. A most interesting ownership and presentation from Thornycroft who were ship builders. Scarce. Profusely illustrated throughout. (ilustrador).

First edition, one of 300 extra-illustrated "Édition De Luxe" copies, in a sumptuous binding with 93 added plates showing famous exchange members. Long before Joseph Stiglitz identified the widespread near-religious faith in the power of the market, this deluxe edition was directly advertised as being bound "in the best approved… family-Bible style" (The Pall Mall Gazette, 18 April 1900). The splendid illustrations by Joseph Pennell and Dudley Hardy were commissioned for this work, which concludes with 131 portrait plates depicting the trustees, managers, and members of the Stock Exchange's general purposes committee. Joseph Pennell (1857-1926), a friend of Whistler and Sargeant, established himself as a leading etcher of landscape and architectural prints. Dudley Hardy (1867-1922) remains known for his influence on English poster design, with his best-known being Gaiety Girl (1893). This attractive volume includes the "History of the Stock Exchange" by Charles Duguid, then City editor of the Westminster Gazette, and includes discussions on the sporting endeavours of the Exchange's members, its benevolent fund, and the orchestral society which it established in 1883. Quarto. With 156 plates, including views of the Stock Exchange by Pennell and Hardy, many with facing captions and tissue guards. Tables, diagrams, and illustrations in the text. Original black morocco, spine lettered, ruled, and decorated in gilt, covers decorated in gilt and blind and with elaborate brass cornerpieces and clasps, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. First edition, the "Édition De Luxe", one of 300 copies issued in an elaborate binding with clasps; an "Édition ordinaire" of 1,000 copies in vellum was also published. The book comprises a history of the exchange by Charles Duguid, the city editor of the Westminster Gazette, and also includes discussions on the sporting endeavo…urs of the Exchange's members, its benevolent fund, and the orchestral society. It includes portraits by Joseph Pennell and Dudley Hardy, specially commissioned for the work, of the trustees, managers, and members of the Stock Exchange's general purposes committee. The deluxe binding was advertised as "in the best approved family-Bible style, including the orthodox binding, massive corners, gilt clasps, and all. If the fortunate subscriber does not feel a meritorious man as he surveys his possession, then compilers, authors, artists, and craftsmen have lived in vain" (The Pall Mall Gazette, 18 April 1900). Quarto. With 156 plates, including views of the Stock Exchange by Pennell and Hardy, many with facing captions. Tables, diagrams, and illustrations in the text. Original black morocco, spine lettered in gilt, compartments and covers richly gilt, brass cornerpieces and clasps, marbled endpapers. Light rubbing, hinges a little tender, slight spotting. A very good copy.
