Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very good. First Edition. Small octavo: 230 p. with the large lithographed Bancroft folding map and numerous advertisements. Original green cloth binding, with decorative gilt and black stamping. A bit of wear to the corners and tips; otherwise very good. Cowan p.287; Rocq 9831. In 1883, with the Knights Te…mplar due to assemble in San Francisco for their first triennial conclave to be held west of St. Louis, educator Ira Hoitt (1833-1905) saw an opportunity. Between jobs - his term in the California State Assembly was over, and his election to the San Francisco Board of Education still in the future - Hoitt decided to put together a pocket-sized guidebook aimed specifically at the thousands of Masons due to arrive that summer. Issued in both cloth and paper editions, packed with ads for Bancroft & Co., Bradley & Rulofson, Tabor the Photographer, Ghiradelli & Sons, the Yosemite Stage Co., and other local businesses, the guide was advertised as "comprehensive, concise and reliable [.] much information will be found in this handsome little book, of great value to the people of the Pacific Coast, and indispensable to the stranger." Included are a traveler's guide to California via the Central Pacific, Southern Pacific, and Northern Pacific railroads; information on the climate, history, and attractions of California, and a section on camping, as well as an extensive description of San Francisco and its sights - landmark buildings, picnic grounds, Golden Gate Park, clubs and libraries, hotels, Nob Hill, the Cliff House, Woodward's Garden, Chinatown, schools, etc. The last 60 pages are devoted to the Knights Templar with a history of the order, officers, the Triennial Committee and sub-committees, the conclave's week-long program, and other helpful information.

Añadir al carritoBlue printed wrappers with an illustration of Ulysses Grant on the front. Light wear at edges, generally fine condition. 156 pp., large uncolored map of San Francisco, reinforced along some folds. While titled as a program for a G. A. R. encampment, this is actually a complete guide to California and the Pacific Coast with just…a few pages at the back devoted to the G. A. R. event. There is extensive information about San Francisco, the Gold Region, spas and resorts, and other activities for visitors to the region. There are also many ads for local businesses. The uncolored map by Britton & Rey measures 48x60 cm. and shows all of San Francisco County.

Añadir al carritoEphemera. Three handwritten letters (four pages in all) by Hoitt (1833 - 1905) to San Diego attorney S. S. Sanborn, all dating 1874 (February 10, February 18, and May 18). The letters exhibit both a friendly tone ('how is your family?') and the writer's underlined exasperation ('my tax receipts have not come / please explain at…once'). One letter inquires as to the 'worth per acre' of a Pueblo land lot. All on Hoitt's letterhead as a Real Estate Stock and Money Broker. Hoitt served in the state assembly and as well as Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of California. Letters appear to have been pasted by the rear left-side edge into a book and later removed, with strip of pasted paper still attached; strip just touching script on the one leaf written on both sides. Pages had been folded for mailing. Letters written and signed by Hoitt.
