The author gives detailed accounts of her family's journey across the plains in a wagon train. She records the prices of mules for which her father purchased 6 for $1,200 and how their wagons were equipped. She tells of the hardships encountered, trouble with Indians, Fort Kearney, the sight of worn-out and dead animals along the trail, together with accounts of the others they were traveling with. The second part of the book covers her time after reaching Colorado. Graff 1887, (notes this 1st edition, but only had the 1924 second edition.) Howes H481, (only notes the 2nd ed.) Mintz 564 has the entry for this title, but obviously didn't have a copy as there's no description. Wilcox, Colorado A Bibliography, lists both editions, "A dangerous crossing of the Plains among hostile Indians in the summer of 1864. What happened on the other side; being events recorded by the author in an old diary, begun at the age of fourteen." Rare in the first edition.

The first section, "A Dangerous Crossing of the Plains Among Hostile Indians in the Summer of 1864" records the 8 week journey from St. Joe, Missouri to Empire City, Colorado Territory untaken by the family of the author when she was 13 years old. She gives a detailed account of their crossing the plains in a wagon train including the hardships encountered, Indian troubles, Fort Kearney, and the accounts of others traveling with them. The second section, "What Happened on the Other Side Being Events Recorded by the Author in an Old Diary, Begun at the Age of Fourteen and Covering a Period of Years." The authors' father moved his family to Empire City to become a Superintendent of a group of mines. She presents the second section in a series of lengthy letters spanning the period of March, 1865 to June, 1874. Her account of her family's life in the mining towns in the mountains of Colorado is detailed, entertaining, and insightful. This first edition is a rare work with only 2 copies having appeared for sale publicly, and major collections lack this first edition. Graff 1887 notes this first edition, but only had the 1924 second edition. Howes H481 only notes the second edition. The scarce expanded second edition of Emma Shepard Hill's "modern overland" recounting her experiences when, as a thirteen year-old, she and her family travelled "across the plains during the Indian uprising in the summer of 1864." Hill explains that in the late 1880s she outlined her narrative with the assistance of her father, and also by consulting her sister's diary of the journey (later destroyed). She combined these sources, as well as her letters from the period, to craft this account of their adventures crossing overland from their home in Ohio to Colorado, where they settled. The first forty pages describe the family's experiences as they travelled from Quincy, Illinois, by rail to St. Joseph, and from there by steamer to Atchison. They then went to Fort Kearny and via the South Platte to Denver, eventually settling at Empire City. All along the way, Hill writes, they felt fearful due to the widely-reported uprisings by the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes. She describes burned out ranches and other evidence of raids that led her family to join a larger wagon train, and describes the precautions taken to guard the women and children. She admits that the travellers themselves were courting danger, as she did when "raiding a chief's burial tree, helping herself to ornaments and arrowheads" (Mintz). The rest of the text describes their life in Empire City, Colorado, and combines her letters of the period with her recollections. Her father, a lawyer, practiced for several years in nearby Georgetown. The in-text illustrations are by Jane Porter Robertson, and the plates feature a portrait of Hill from a daguerreotype taken at the start of the journey, a portrait of her father, and an image of the log house they lived in.
