~ ~ ~ Dr. Franklyn H. Hicks was considered having the best collection of Nova Scotia material in private hands. On his passing, his collection was listed in three catalogues by Patrick McGahern (Catalogues 160, 162 & 173) in 2002/2003. Titled "Nova Scotia and the Maritimes", 1582 books and ephemera were listed. With the followin…g ms note on the front endpaper by - Donald Creighton. "For a person to live in a country and to be ignorant of its history on almost every issue that come up, means that he is really walking around in the dark all the time. I think that history can give you a sense of courage in a difficult and dark world. You can say to yourself: I at least know something about this world, I know how it got the way it is, I know where it's possibly going, not certainly but possibly. I can stand up to the world. - Donald Creighton". Dr. Hicks was instrumental in the naming of Patrick McGahern Books. ~ ~ ~ Dr. Hicks told me that the first time he went to Amtmann's in Montreal, when he was leaving Bernard pulled a book off the shelf and asked if he had a copy. It was the first volume of the TPL bibliography. He didn't, and Bernard replied, "Well here take this, you'll need it because we refer to it often in our catalogues". Dr. Hicks already a book buyer was amused and impressed. Manuscript with periodical articles & handwritten entries, most in 1970's. small 4to., 24 x17.5 cm, over 200 leaves, bound in pebble grain black fabrikoid on ruled paper, indexed leaves, newsprint toned, signed by Dr. Hicks on title, a unique item.
