Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. 1st Edition. ONE THIRD OF A NATION: LORENA HICKOK REPORTS ON THE GREAT DEPRESSION, Hickok Lorena, edited by Richard Lowitt and Maurine Beasley, hardcover with unclipped dust jacket, 1st edition per publisher's custom, illustrated, 1981. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. No bookplate or signature of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The dark gray cloth boards are in very good condition (lightly bumped spine). The dust jacket is in fair condition (chipping and crinkling along top and bottom edges, thin spot on front cover at top, tiny hole in one fold). 9 x 6, 378 pages, 27 ounces XX [From the inner flaps] In THE LIFE OF LORENA HICKOK: E.R.'s FRIEND, Doris Faber's focus led her to mention only briefly Hickok's reports to Harry Hopkins, head of Roosevelt's Federal Emergency Relief Administration. Noted historian Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., considers such scant attention a mistake. Hopkins himself told Eleanor Roosevelt that Hickok's reports would be the best history of the Depression. And no less a figure than FDR had hoped to see her reports published, something she attempted, but failed to accomplish. Now, nearly a half century later, her book, with its sharp-eyed portrayal of the Depression's bitter human depths, is finally available. In the Twenties and early Thirties, Lorena Hickok made a name for herself as a journalist for the Minneapolis Tribune, New York Daily Mirror, and Associated Press. With the emergence of Roosevelt and the New Deal, she was hired on as Hopkins's confidential investigator. Hickok was told to gather information about the day-to-day toll the Depression was exacting from the lives of individual citizens. Hopkins instructed her: Tell me what you see and hear. All of it. Don't ever pull punches. From 1933 to 1935 Hickok travelled across thirty-two states, from Maine to California and the Dakotas to Texas, and discovered firsthand the shocking plight of the millions of unemployed and dispossessed Americans. Lorena Hickok's reports, written with the economy, focus, and impact of vignettes, detail the vast interlocking matrix of private misfortunes and public relief efforts. No significant facet of this matrix goes unrecorded. Her pointed commentaries touch upon labor conflicts; political patronage; banking practices; bureaucratic inefficiency; inverted agricultural economics; industrial modernization; human migrations and peonage; urban versus rural needs; the massive distribution of too little food, clothing, work, and money; the significant role of women in relief administration; and the ever-present, lurking shadow of Communism. Most of all, she gives us the faces and voices of farmers, blue-collar workers, jobless executives, ethnic minorities, migrants, transients, young and old - the unfed, unclothed, unemployed, and homeless.

Añadir al carritoSoftcover. Condición: Fair. First edition. 12mo. 92pp. Paper wrappers. Fair only with chipped front wrapper that has been professionally restored, extensive chipping at the spine, and first six pages also chipped. The first issue of Pound's short-lived literary magazine that includes "Part of Canto XX," a poem from Ernest Hemingway, and contributions from Richard Aldington, Guy Hickok, and John Rodker. Interestingly, Hemingway's name is mistakenly listed as "E.W. Hemingway" on the cover when his middle name was Miller and his one-line poem, "Neo-Thomist" is also misspelled and hand corrected by Pound in each of the 500 copies that were printed. Laid in is a postcard advertising the magazine and a small slip from New York newspaper man, John M. Price. He not only inspired Pound to start the magazine, but was in charge of distributing the first issue in States and seeking out contributions for future issues.
