In 1899 Jeremiah Hickey, a bookkeeper for a men's clothing manufacturer in Rochester, New York, joined forces with his friend Jacob Freeman and together with a few investors, launched their Hickey-Freeman brand. In 1908 they made a decision only to manufacture high-quality men's clothing. By the 1920's, the manufacturing facility employed over 1700 workers. The plant expanded several times and in the mid 2000s was purchased and repurchased several times. During the Coronavirus pandemic, Hickey-Freeman shifted its focus to manufacturing masks and other protective equipment for the medical profession.
