Rare offprint from The Modern Medical Therapy in General Practice, inscribed by Nobel Prize winning physician Philip Hench, "To Jerry with affection - Phil." The recipient, Gerald Rodnan, was a lifelong doctor and professor at University of Pittsburgh Medical School, appointed chief of the newly formed Department of Rheumatology… and Clinical Immunology in 1956 and president of the American Rheumatology Association 1975-76. Octavo, original wrappers. Philip Hench received the Nobel Prize in 1950 for the discovery of cortisone and its application to rheumatoid arthritis. An exceptional association between two physicians both involved in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. There are no other examples of the offprint in institutions according to OCLC. In very good condition, with Rodnan few marginalia marks to a few pages. Rare and desirable, especially inscribed.

Dr Hench spent several months in Europe studying and observing. These typed letters, signed, are dated mid-October 1928. Six letters of introduction from Leonard George Rowntree (18831959) a Canadian physician and medical researcher who was credited with founding the research tradition at the Mayo Clinic.[1] He is most well know…n for pioneering kidney research including the Rowntree test for kidney function; dialysis; the intravenous pyelogram and plasmapheresis. Rowntree was awarded the Medal for Merit in 1946. Five letters of introduction from Louis Blanchard Wilson (December 22, 1866 October 5, 1943) an American pathologist and the chief of pathology at Mayo Clinic from 1905 to 1937. Wilson is most famous for initiating the routine use of the frozen section procedure for rapid intraoperative diagnosis. One letter of introduction from Daniel P. O'Brien of The Rockefeller Foundation.
