"Cecil Hemley (1914-1966) was born in New York City. He received his B.A. from Amherst and his M.A. from the University of Chicago, and did further graduate work at the Yale school of Drama and the New School for Social Research. He taught at the New School, City College, Columbia and New York University, and he was cofounder of Noonday Press and its Director and Editor until 1963, when he became Director of the Ohio University Press. Hemley served literature in many ways: he was the first to bring Isaac Bashevis Singer to public attention as his editor and translator, and he was also the President of the Poetry Society of America.
