(Abstract:) "The thesis contains a biography of Carl Gustaf Hellqvist (1851-1890) together with analyses of nine of his most important paintings according to genetic and iconographical method. The biography is based on letters and diary entries. C G Hellqvist is one of Sweden's most prominent historical artists. He came from a poor family. In Stockholm he attended Konstakademien. His paintings attracted much attention, mostly at international exhibitions in Europe. He moved to München and eventually to Berlin, where he received a chair at Akademie der Künste. Due to serious illness, which developed into mental illness, he was forced to retire from this position and, still in his 39th year, he died at Irrenanstalt in München. Hellqvist's nine most important paintings are analyzed in chronological order. Six of them portray events in Swedish history and five of these concern the Reformation of the Church. One of the paintings deals with the French king Louis XI, while another depicts Gretchen from Goethe's Faust. Hellqvist's most famous historical painting is Valdemar Atterdag imposes a levy on Visby, a Hanseatic theme. The present study concerns the development of the painting from the first sketches to the completed work. Most of Hellqvist's paintings are in Statens konstmuseer, Stockholm, but Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in and Nationalgalerie in Berlin also have some of his works. Biografin bygger främst på brev och dagboksanteckningar. Han kom från fattiga förhållanden och utbildades vid Konstakademien i Stockholm. Efter flera vistelser i Paris och utställningar där, bl a på den berömda Salongen, bosatte han sig i München. Hans konst rönte stor uppmärksamhet främst på internationella utställningar i Europa. I Berlin blev han professor vid Akademie der Künste. En svår sjukdom var anledningen till att han tvingades sluta denna anställning och, ännu inte fyllda 39 år, avled han på Irrenanstalt i München. Hellqvists nio viktigaste målningar analyseras i kronologisk följd. Sex av dem skildrar svenska historiska händelser. Reformationen inom kyrkan valde han ofta som tema. Hellqvists mest kända historiebilder är Valdemar Atterdag brandskattar Visby, som skildrar ett ämne från Hansatiden, och Sten Sture d y:s död på Mälarens is, som behandlar ett stort svenskt ämne. The relationship between the Orthodox Churches and the World Council of Churches (WCC) reached a critical point just before the 8th Assembly of the WCC in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1998. The Special Commission on Orthodox Participation in the WCC, inaugurated in Harare, worked during the period 19992002 to solve the crisis and secure Orthodox participation in the WCC. The study shows how the initial, specific and individual Orthodox concerns led to a profound ecclesiological discussion and that resulted in concrete changes in WCC practices, the best known of which is the change to decision-making by consensus. The study spans the years 1998 to 2006, from the WCC Harare Assembly to the Porto Alegre Assembly. Hence, the initiation and immediate reception of the Special Commission are included in the study.
