Grazie a lui, l'Homo modjokertensis e il Meganthropus paleojavanicus entrarono a far parte della grande famiglia che da poco aveva accolto il pitecantropo e il sinantropo. La trattazione del periodo relativo alla seconda guerra mondiale e di quello successivo prosegue descrivendo il lavoro svolto negli Stati Uniti insieme a Weidenreich (noto teorizzatore di una discendenza umana da sconcertanti specie giganti) e in Africa, con Leakey, sulle orme del Proconsul e dell'Australopithecus, antenati preumani di sorprendente primitività, appartenenti a un'era antichissima. Gli anelli un tempo mancanti si sono fatti enormemente numerosi: sono ormai un'intera costellazione. La storia dell'evoluzione umana si apre così su una specie di fantascienza del passato, non meno ardita di quella del futuro ma concretamente verificabile.
