Klima), ale silne zapusobil i na ceskou literarni kritiku (Salda) a basnickou tvorbu (Brezina). Masarykova razantni kritika, zduraznujici antagonismus s idealy humanity, se opira o hluboke nepochopeni dila. Brezina se kriticky vyrovnava s ucenim nemeckeho voluntaristy, avsak nektere postoje prijima za sve (napr. pritakani zivotu). F.X.Saldu vyrazne obohatila metodologie hodnoceni umeleckeho dila. Filozoficky system L.Klimy bohuzel trpi nedostatkem originality, nebot ideove koreny lze nalezt u F. Nietzscheho. Shrnujici vyklad vlivu nemeckeho filozofa na ceske prostredi od konce 19. po pocatek 20.stoleti.

This monograph is nothing less than a bold attempt at solving the riddle of Gogol's novel Dead Soulsthat even inspired a staging of Dead Soulsat Schauspiel Stuttgart. Heftrich gives a comprehensive, coherent answer to the question of the novel's meaning by meticulously laying bare its structure. The first part of the monograph is dedicated to one section of Gogol's novel that has been neglected by virtually all critics - a clue that leads to a strictly ethical reading of Gogol's epic. Gogol, as it emerges, constructed Dead Soulsstrictly according to a moral pattern. It is amazing to discover how flawlessly Dead Soulsis built in this regard. The novel thus proves to be a true descendant of medieval romance with its inseparable interrelation between ethics and epics. A bold attempt at solving the riddle of Gogol's novel Dead Souls. In spite of the incommensurability of the Holocaust and the dropping of the first atomic bombs, the juxtaposition of Auschwitz and Hiroshima has long been a topic of serious debate. While in public memory on both sides of the Iron Curtain Auschwitz and Hiroshima have become icons of industrialized mass murder, comparative research on this iconization has been dominated by decidedly Western perspectives. Moreover, the fact that in communist Eastern Europe the interpretation of these two events differed considerably from their treatment in the West has been largely neglected. Thus, in communist Eastern Europe, with its ideology based on historical optimism, the concept of rupture was either ignored or dismissed as Western defeatism, whereas in Western thinking, both Auschwitz and Hiroshima have often been seen as fundamental ruptures that shook the foundations of civilization. In their contributions to this volume, historians, art historians, film scholars, and literary scholars investigate the perception of Auschwitz and Hiroshima in Eastern Europe from a wide range of disciplines and from cultural as well as medial perspectives.
