The Portico Library is one of Manchester's historic cultural institutions, founded in 1806 in a neoclassical building designed by the distinguished architect Thomas Harrison. An early subscription library, many of the Portico's books have seen better days, Manchester's heavily polluted atmosphere in the 19th century having devoured the leather bindings; and unlike the Liverpool Athenaeum, which has both a fine library and dining facilities, the books take centre stage.
