Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First Published In 1937 '). Rare book. You can see the orange covers in the photos. They are in nice condition. The gilt lettering on the spine is still bright. There is a little crinkling at the spine ends. The orange of the top edges is darkened. There is little to no rubbing at the edges and corners. The top page edge was likely an orange similar to the covers, now it's somewhat darkened. There are few dust stains at the bottom page edge. The book is solidly bound. I'm not finding any cracks or spaces between any of the facing pages or between the covers and any of the pages. The inside covers and end papers are pretty clean. There are three printed numbers off the bottom edge of the rear side of the rear end paper (2 37). There are no other numbers on any of the other pages. There is a very small address label off the bottom edge of the rear inside cover. It says 'The Times Book Club. 42 Wigmore Street. W1.' That would be in London. I don't see any of the typical soiling you might see in a book of this age, but a number the pages, due I guess to the type of paper, have a few small, and somewhat blending, amber -colored spots, foxing. There's also light toning at the margins. Still the pages are in nice condition. I'm not finding any creasing. There aren't any markings (other than the three numbers which I suppose could be called a marking). There aren't any attachments other than the address label, in other words it's Not ex-library-- and no bookplates. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The somewhat unlikely positive is the presence of its dust jacket. You can see it in the first few photos. It is in quite solid shape with just the teeny tiny loss at the top edge of the spine, and the smooth rubbing at the top edge of the front and here and there as well, nothing you can't see. There is a little bit of crinkling at the top edges of the flaps, which are otherwise in very good shape. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It has been protected by a fitted protective cover. It was on there when I first purchased the book some years ago. I removed it to get a clearer look at the jacket and because I have a better one that I will fit onto it after I have scanned the photos. Here are the chapter headings: Roger Fry's Theory of Art; The Tragedy of Mr. Berenson's Theory of Art; Cézanne, Cubism, and Modern Art; Is The Imagination Creative?; The Realistic Basis Of Contemporary Aesthetics; Morality and Art; and Standards And Principles In Art. The rear flap informs that the author was an art critic for the London Mercury from 1920 to 1930 and has been the Hon. Sec. to the Aristotelian Society and editor of its "Proceedings" since 1924, also a contributor to the New Statesman and other journals. The front flap states: 'Roger Fry's theory of art, which is scattered throughout a number of writings, is here brought together and appraised as a whole. Mr. Hannay finds the value of the theory not so much in its doctrine of "plasticity", which he criticizes as one-sided, as in its insistence on the close connection between the emotion and the medium. Roger Fry's later position favoring a "Surrealist" psycho-analytical explanation is challenged. In other essays the weakness which the author sees in modern art movements is traced to the uncritical acceptance of certain assumptions, such as that there is a necessary opposition between abstract and representational art, that the imagination is creative and that, if art is subjective, the terms good and bad are out of place. While criticizing modern movements the author does not hold any brief for "academical art." '.
