Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Now back in print, this volume is the first overview of the French-born, Los Angelesbased artist Guy de Cointet (193483). De Cointet was fascinated with language, which he explored primarily through performance and drawing. His practice involved collecting random phrases, words and even single letters from popular culture and literary sourceshe often cited Raymond Roussels novel Impressions of Africa as influentialand working these elements into nonlinear narratives, which were presented as plays to his audience. De Cointet is one of the major figures in Los Angeles Conceptual art movement of the 1970s, having strongly influenced a number of prominent Los Angelesbased artists, including Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley. The book, written by Marie de Brugerolle and published with the Estate of Guy de Cointet, offers an overview of this enigmatic and influential oeuvre. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very good. First Edition. Oblong 16mo (5" x 15 1/8"). Full silver cloth-covered boards; issued without a dust jacket. Some very minor wear; else very good or better. Accompanied by a short typed note from Edith Sustaita and a three-page typescript translating the text of the book. This collaborative artists' book is written in the form of photographic code, produced in Larry Bell's studio when Guy de Cointet (1934-84) was his assistant. Bell (b.1939) provided Cointet with 29 different photographs that he arranged in horizontal grids to create 49 varied images per page. In each of the small images what appear to be dancers perform leaps, hold poses, or walk in front of the camera. Cointet then converted the photographs into an alphabetical key that is provided on narrow horizontal strips that are folded and secreted inside a rear pouch that can be used for deciphering the book. Noted for his puzzling code books, Cointet had a wide-ranging conceptual art practice that included drawing, playwriting, and performance. He culled phrases, words, and sometimes single letters from media, literature, and pop culture, which he would work into abstract narratives that became the sources for his drawings and performances. He is recognized for his influence on well-known conceptual artists such as Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelly. Scarce, OCLC locates only six holdings: Whitney Museum, MOCA Los Angeles, Kunstbiblio Staatliche Museum Zu Berlin, Harvard, Utah State, and Bibliotheque Nationale de France.
