The work was written on… the eve of the Cuban War of Independence from Spain, soon after the Spanish cancelled a trade pact between the Cubans and the United States. Condition: About Good. Covers slightly dust soiled and showing edgewear. The binding shaken in places, and may be missing a leaf after the title page. Otherwise, the text is clean. ***Author Raimundo Cabrera Bosch (1852-1923) was a leading figure in 19th century Cuba, and its struggle to gain its freedom from Spain. At the age of 17 he was jailed on the Isle of Pines for trying to join revolutionary Cubans in the United States. He studied in Spain and became a lawyer, returning to build a successful practice in Havana. During Cuba's War of Independence (1895-98) he published an independent newspaper, "Cuba y America", from New York City. ** Translator Laura Guiteras was the niece of Eusebio Guiteras (1842-1845), a Cuban writer who wrote of his travels to the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Laura Guiteras includes a short biography of her uncle in this work. *** Scarce. Book.
