Añadir al carritoHard cover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. A pictorial look at Thomas Jefferson's historic Virginia estate, Monticello. Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 â?? July 4, 1826) was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He had previously served as the second vice president of the United States under John Adams and as the first United States Secretary of State under George Washington. The principal author of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson was a proponent of democracy, republicanism, and individual rights, motivating American colonists to break from the Kingdom of Great Britain and form a new nation; he produced formative documents and decisions at both the state and national levels. Monticello (/Ë?mÉ?ntɪË?tÊ?É?loÊ?/ MON-tih-CHEL-oh) was the primary plantation of Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, who began designing Monticello after inheriting land from his father at age 26. Located just outside Charlottesville, Virginia, in the Piedmont region, the plantation was originally 5,000 acres, and was under extensive cultivation of tobacco and mixed crops, later shifting from tobacco cultivation to wheat in response to changing markets. Due to its architectural and historic significance, the property has been designated a National Historic Landmark. In 1987, Monticello and the nearby University of Virginia, also designed by Jefferson, were together designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The current nickel, a United States coin, features a depiction of Monticello on its reverse side. Jefferson designed the main house using neoclassical design principles described by Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and reworking the design through much of his presidency to include design elements popular in late 18th-century Europe and integrating numerous ideas of his own. Situated on the summit of an 850-foot (260 m)-high peak in the Southwest Mountains south of the Rivanna Gap, the name Monticello derives from Italian meaning "little mountain".

Añadir al carrito*Sales/posting to the USA suspended*. Card covers, b&w plates, 201pp. Light wear to card edges; a very good copy. Charles Granquist was 17 when war was declared with Germany in 1939. He was initially in the militia but decided to join the AIF and was posted to a signals platoon in the 2/4th Battalion. He was initially posted to the Holy Land, Derna and Benghazi. He was later captured by the Germans in Greece. He was determined to continue carrying the war to his captors anyway he could. Here he describes his shame at becoming a POW and how he believed he had failed himself, his mates and as a soldier. He orchestrated a remarkable five escape attempts, all of which ended unsuccessfully. Yet he refused to give up, determined to fulfil his duty and make his own small contribution to the war effort.
