The introduction explains that the book is the diary written for a close friend who was imprisoned for being a conscientious objector in New Zealand in WW2. It was designed to keep him in touch with events in the outside world and especially happenings at Canterbury College, where both had been students together a few years before.

The following reminiscences may have some subject interest outside its tentative story form.
