Dà titolo a questa raccolta la prima poesia in ordine di pubblicazione, che fa da motivo conduttore a tutto il volumetto: la percezione di uno stato d'animo di insoddisfazione e precarietà, di un disagio di una particolare condizione fisico-psichica, che trova comunque un appagamento, un motivo per andare avanti nella situazione in cui si è, anche se questa non è mai la soluzione più appetibile: come quando si permane sulla soglia di casa, oscillando tra l'istinto a rientrare tra le protettive mura di casa e la volontà di godere dei benefici effluvi esterni (L'odore del vento); o come l'uccellino (Useleto in gabia) rinchiuso in prigione, che vorrebbe godersi libero i raggi di sole ed il cinguettìo dei propri compagni al di fuori delle sbarre, ma che, quando cala il buio, trova persino accogliente la gabbia che lo racchiude e perciò si acquieta nello spirito. Così, in questo continuo tentennare, l'umanità trascorre la propria vita, mai del tutto pienamente appagata.
