The letter begins: 'Dear Mr. Armsrtrong, | I see no other course than that which you are following. It would be looked on as a slight if you were not present at the gathering of Darlington Liberals, though we shall be very sorry not to have you…r company.' He trusts they will be 'rightly guided with regard to Mr. Ward', whom it will be difficult to replace 'at the "Birmingham News"'. He will 'leave the matter for a few days until we can come to a definite decision'. Añadir al carritoBoth 1p., 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with paperclip stain to first letter. Unusual signature, in block capitals. Both addressed to Brooks at the Savage Club, with both salutations to 'Collin'. ONE: 18 April 1947. Begins: 'My dear Collin, | I consulted my firend in the Process Department here and he said that…a half-tone block would not be very successful, as there is a dash of colour in the picture and the half-tone would not bring it out very well. He thought that a photograph on a piece of Matt bromide paper would look much better and not spoil the detail of the drawing. | So our photographer made a negative and I had a print made on the bromide paper, which I enclose with my compliments. | This is straight from the horse's mouth, Sir! There are other horses, I know, and if you feel that you would like to adjourn to other stables I shall quite understand.' He ends with a discussion of a couple of practical matters. TWO: 9 May 1947. He is enclosing the negative, and apologises for the delay: 'This has no connection with my artistic temperament I really have been unusually busy lately.' THREE: Carbon copy of typed letter from Brooks to Strube. 18 April 1947. 1p., 8vo. One edge frayed. Letter of thanks, beginning: 'When I left you, somewhat abruptly, at the lunch-table today, I went to the Northwest Room for the glass of port which my doctor insists that I take after each meal, hoping you would soon join us. As you did not join us, I picked up from Jack's box the parcel, the print, and your letter.' Strube was the highest paid 'journalist' in Fleet Street, on a salary of £10,000 a year. [Eden Phillpotts, novelist.] Autograph Letter Signed ('Eden Phill') [to A. G. Gardiner, editor of the Daily News], complaining of a review of his book 'Green Alleys', 'the great cause of the natural born child' and the 'Bastardy Laws'.
Eden Phillpotts (1862-1960), English novelist, often writing on Dartmoor [Alfred George Gardiner ['Alpha of the Plough'] (1865-1946), editor of the Daily News; Robert Lynd (1879-1949), Irish essayist]

Añadir al carritoIn poor condition, on aged and brittle paper, with significant chipping to edges involving loss of text, including the end of Philpotts's signature. Undated, but written in 1916, the year of publication of Phillpotts' 'The Green Alleys'. Headed in blue pencil 'Mr Lynd' (i.e for the attention of Daily News columnist Robert Lynd).… The letter reads: 'Dear Sir | I must record that the opportunity I gave you to do a little in the great cause of the natural born child was not done; & it is a source of deep regret to me that, after I had told you of the matter in story, "Green Alleys', you allowed a critic to dismiss the subject in that manner. You, who stand for democracy, might well have been looked to, to help to redress this wrong & call attention to a wicked enactment & a crying scandal. That your critic sneers at it in a spirit one has not until now associated with "The Daily News". If it is conceivable t you approve theh Bastardy Laws, one course no more to say, except let d know it. I am most truly yo | Eden Phill'. Postscript: 'One expected reactionary papers tto slight me - but not you among liberal journals & in the forefront of thought.' Philpotts has attached (with a now-rusted staple) a cutting of a review of the book by C. E. Lawrence in the Daily Chronicle, praising him for being 'plucky' in having 'put a problem before readers in these exacting days'.
[Herbert Trench, Irish poet.] Autograph Letter Signed to A. G. Gardiner, editor of the Daily News, asking for a review of his book 'Poems with Fables in Prose'.

Añadir al carrito1p., 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged and folded twice. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir | For my book - "Poems with Fables in Prose" (2 vols. Constable) I confess I particularly aspire to the honour of a review in the Daily News. He gives a list of themes which the volumes contain, 'Inter alia', including 'new philosophical ite…as'. In black pencil at the head of the page (probably by Gardiner) is 'Mr Lynd', i.e. a direction for the letter to be forwarded to columnist Robert Lynd.

Accordion fold contents in 6 two-sided panels (3" x 4.5"), with illustrations on one side and text on other, text at inside back cover. The text, apparently a reprint of a 1 September 1888 Manitou Springs Daily Journal article, tells the story of the caves' discovery and provides lavish descriptions of these "dazzling wonders and gorgeous cuts and figures of Dame Nature.hidden and treasured in the bowels of the earth." George Washington Snider (1851-1921), a stone-cutter from Ohio, explored and connected several of the Manitou Grand Caverns caves in the early 1880s while in partnership with Charles Rhinehart, with whom he ran tours of the Cave of the Winds. Following a split with Rhinehart, Snider began running tours of the Manitou Grand Caverns in 1885. By 1896, overwhelmed with debt, he had turned operations over to his brother and left Manitou.

" FluxLux was a set of written instructions by Watts for his Last Event, a ceremony that he directed Larry Miller and Sara Seagull to execute with Fluxus friends. They, together with Ben Patterson, Joe Jones, Alison Knowles, Dick Higgins, Philip Corner, Yoshi Wada, Rafael Ortiz, myself, and others realized the event. George Brecht, Eric Andersen, Milan Kní ák and Ben Vautier sent scores or texts. A phone call from Al Hansen in Cologne was amplified over the PA system. Francesco Conz came from Italy and Michael Berger from Germany. Many of Bob s former students and my graduate students were all actively engaged in the organization and performance of the various activities and events. It began with Bob s iconic piece 2 Inches on the porch roof, and then helium filled balloons stamped with TRACE BOB WATTS were pushed out of the window of the room where Bob died to float up into the blue sky and join Bob s spirit. It was a fantastically beautiful day. The day was filled with food, music, performance, conversation and fellowship among a great gathering of friends. There was an auction to raise funds for a Robert Watts Scholarship for the Rutgers MFA graduate program that Bob had helped to start. Phil Corner was auctioneer. Joe Jones, Larry Miller and Ben Patterson collaborated to adapt a remote controlled battery-powered boat with a paddle wheel dispenser to spread some of Bob s ashes into the pond. It took some coaxing from them for it to achieve its mission. There was a 21-gun salute with a variety of funny guns and some real ones fired by members of the local gun club. Ben Patterson as Flux Admiral fired the final shot, a rocket from the canon of his USS Robert Watts that he had built and which capsized when launched. As events at the pond drew to a close, a small plane, at Eric Andersen s request, circled overhead with a banner saying "MOON." The pilot waved. We waved back. The day ended with a score sent by Allan Kaprow, What s Watts Watts, where we added up the wattage of all the lights in Bob s house, turning them on as we counted, with Larry Miller announcing the totals, and leaving the house ablaze as we departed into the fading evening light." - Geoff Hendricks, From Job Interview to FluxLux, a 32 year friendship with Bob Watts.
