Front cover and first eight leaves show bio-predation along outside edge, mostly at top corner, though a little at lower corner. Moisture stain along bottom edge. Rear co…ver is missing, and last leaf is partially detached and shows some tears. Aside from last leaf, volume remains tight and despite the numerous faults, all text is intact, clear, and only minimally affected.

Añadir al carritoAn address by Massachusetts Senator George Hoar in support of women's suffrage. Hoar includes testimony from Gov. Warren of Wyoming and Chief Justice Greene of Washington on the benefits of establishing enfranchisement in those states. Hoar concludes: "My friends, I believe that every step in human civilization has been worked b…y the nearer approach of woman to her just and equal place of influence in the State. I believe that every such approach has at the same time purified the home and rendered womanhood sweeter and more feminine. Everywhere she has âmoved with us to our good'." The American Woman Suffrage Association was established in 1869, and in 1870, under the leadership of Lucy Stone, began publishing "The Woman's Journal." In 1890 the group merged with the National Woman Suffrage Association to form National American Woman Suffrage Association. Bifolium (9 ½" x 10 ½"). Tiny closed tear along the spine, light wear and toning, but a well-preserved example.

George Frisbie Hoar (1826 - 1904) reminds the audience of their victories and projects a positive future for the cause. Hoar says, ÒI believe that every step in human civilization has been marked by the n…earer approach of woman to her just and equal place of influence in the StateÉEverywhere she has Ômoved with us to our good.Õ No nation, no city, no household, ever took a lofty place where the influence of woman did not inspire itÉÓ (p. 4). Includes letters from Chief Justice Greene of the Washington Territory and Governor Warren of the Wyoming Territory announcing the success of womenÕs suffrage in the west. 9 x 10 in Single sheet, folded. A couple chips to edges and some faint toning. A very good copy of a fragile, uncommon item. First edition. Printed at the offices of the WomanÕs Journal for the American Woman Suffrage Association. George Frisbie Hoar was a Massachusetts senator, a supporter of womenÕs suffrage, a regent of the Smithsonian Institution, and a president of the American Antiquarian Society. He also actively opposed United States imperialism, most notably through his presentation of theÊK ÊPetitions to Congress in 1897 to protest the annexation of Hawaii. The WomanÕs Journal also printed his address Woman Suffrage Essential to the True Republic, which he delivered at the annual meeting of the New England Woman Suffrage Association in 1873.

Old folds, some browning at margins and edges of text, and verso of second page. Light dustsoiling. Good+. George F. Hoar [1826-1904] was a Republican United States Senator from 1877 until… his death in 1904. During his political career he campaigned for the rights of African Americans and Native Americans, as well as for the women's suffrage movement. [Wikipedia.] Henry D. White, to whom the letter is written, was a member of the White Brothers law firm in New Haven, Connecticut. He graduated from Yale University in 1851 and joined a law firm founded by his father, Henry White. He served as a trustee of the New Haven Savings Bank for fifty years and was its counsel. He also served as a director of the New Haven County National Bank.
