The crystal split in two, giving its darker energies to Baron Dark and transforming him into a skeletal monster. The brighter energies flowed into Lightstar and his family, giving them super-powers. Prince Joshua, however, was caught in between the two and became Grimskull, a half-man, half-skeleton. Since the splitting of the crystal, Lightstar and his family have struggled to survive, while Dark has been trying to recover their part of the crystal and consolidate his power.
