Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Very Good dj. 3rd printing. [minimal shelfwear, just a touch of soiling to the top of the text block; the jacket has some shallow chipping at the top of the spine and just adjacent to it at the top edge of the front panel, a couple of tiny tears and an associated horizontal crease at the top of t…he front panel, and is a bit scuffed on the front panel and lightly faded along the spine]. The second of two volumes in the popular "Best Plays" series, which had commenced with the 1919-20 volume, extended the coverage retrospectively to the beginning of the 20th century. (The other volume, covering 1909-1919, had been published in 1933.) The contents of this volume, and the theatrical season represented by each title, are: "Barbara Frietchie" by Clyde Fitch (1899-1900); "The Climbers" by Clyde Fitche (1900-01); "If I Were King" by Justin Huntly McCarthy (1901-02); "The Darling of the Gods" by David Belasco and John Luther Long (1902-03); "The County Chairman" by George Ade (1903-04); "Leah Kleschna" by C.M.S. McLellan (1904-05); "The Squaw Man" by Edwin Milton Royle (1905-06); "The Great Divide" by William Vaughn Moody (1906-07); "The Witching Hour" by Augustus Thomas (1907-08); "The Man from Home" by Booth Tarkington and Harry Leon Wilson (1908-09). Each playscript is presented in the typical "Best Plays" format, i.e. with prose descriptions of the action alternating with excerpts from the dialogue. The remainder of the volume includes: brief entries on "The Plays and Their Authors"; a season-by-season rundown of plays produced in New York between 1899 and 1909; a name-and-dates only necrology of theatrical "people of outstanding prominence" who had died during the decade. It's notable (at least I think so) that not a single one of these "best plays" has probably been performed in the last one hundred years or so, and that for the most part the playwrights' name have faded into obscurity, with the possible exception of Booth Tarkington -- although I'm pretty sure if you mentioned his name to the Man on the Street, you'd get an answer along the lines of "didn't he used to be the Vikings quarterback?".

News Catalogue Contact & About Partners Downloads Scroll up Scroll down Scroll up Scroll down Scroll up Scroll down Scroll up Scroll down The linguistic situation of… medieval Europe has sometimes been characterized as one of diglossia: one learned language, Latin, was used for religion, law, and documents, while the various vernaculars were used in other linguistic registers. Informing the relationship between Latin and the vernaculars was the choice of Latin as the language of the Western Roman Empire and the Roman Church. This choice entailed the possibility of a shared literary culture and heritage across Europe, but also had consequences for access to that heritage. Scholarship on the Romance languages has contested the relevance of the term diglossia, and the divergence between written or spoken Latin and Romance is a subject of energetic debate. In other linguistic areas, too, questions have been voiced. How can one characterize the interaction between Latin and the various vernaculars, and between the various vernaculars themselves? To what extent could speakers from separate linguistic worlds communicate? These questions are fundamental for anyone concerned with communication, the transmission of learning, literary history, and cultural interaction in the Middle Ages. This volume contains contributions by historians, cultural historians, and students of texts, language, and linguistics, addressing the subject from their various perspectives but at the same time trying to overcome familiar disciplinary divisions.
