Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. DESERT MAVERICKS CAUGHT AND BRANDED BY EVE GANSON DRAWINGS & POEMS 1928. I was tempted to disregard this small book of drawings and poems about the animals of the desert until I noticed that the Foreword had been written by William Temple Hornaday. Dr. Hornaday was an American pioneer of wildlife conservation and the first Director of the New York Zoological Park (now known as the Bronx Zoo). Closer examination revealed charming drawings and catchy text were in abundance. Please find then: Desert Mavericks Caught and Branded by Eve Ganson or Who s Who on the Desert. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ½ x 8 ½ inches 54 pages) was published by Wallace Hebberd of Santa Barbara dated 1928 and presumably the First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. Please see the photos of the Dramatis Personae for your further information. The book is bound in maroon cloth boards with once gilt titles on the cover (or perhaps they are green although I thought they were tarnished). Every page features a nicely drawn scenario for the creature being presented. Condition: This book is in very good condition. There are some blemishes to the hard covers including bumping to the corners and spine tips and some bruising to the leading edge of the front boards. I have raised above the question of whether the titles were once bright gilt. Inside there are some small smudges on the front endpapers and other small random smudges of soiling within but the book is unmarked. The pages are lightly but uniformly toned but I did not find any foxing. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Eve Ganson Ilustrador. Provenance Note: Marjorie Hope Batchelder Marjorie Hope Batchelder (1903-1997) was a transformative figure in 20th-century American puppetry. As a professor at Ohio State University, she elevated puppetry from a craft to an academic discipline. Her most famous work, The Puppet Theatre Handbook (1947), remains a foundational text for performers and historians. The presence of her bookplate in this volume suggests it was part of her personal reference library, likely kept for its whimsical character designs and satirical line work, which align with her professional interest in visual storytelling and characterization. Condition Detail The volume shows moderate external wear, including rubbing to the board edges and slight fraying at the head and foot of the spine. The interior is primarily affected by a moisture tide-mark at the lower gutter of the first several leaves. This staining is most prominent on the front and rear endpapers and title page but diminishes as the book progresses. The binding remains firm, and the illustrations remains harp and clear.
