Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition. Contemporary quarter-leather and marbled boards. Leather covering of spine lacking but paper facing present over spine. Contents from beginning to about halfway through the book with stain on right half of page, first conspicuous and gradually fading away. Many illustrations. The book has been neatly but unprofessionally partly hand-colored by an early reader, mainly in red, yellow, and green-blue. Sometimes the result is good, sometimes incongruous with the subject (e.g., an elephant with a red face and yellow trunk), but it adds to the book's "centeredness" to its period. Most importantly, there are illustrations of the hand-signs for the letters of the alphabet and the word "and." (These have not been colored.) Gallaudet's system of signs became the basis of American Sign Language; he is described on the title page as "Late Principal to the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb." His son founded Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C.
