The work was written by the Guadeloupe-born zoologist and medical doctor Pierre Duchassaing de Fonbressin (1819-1873) and the Italian zoologist and malacologist Giovanni Michelotti (1814-1898). Nissen errs in attributing this work to Duchassaing alone. Published in the series, Natuurkundige Verhandelingen van de Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen, with the title and half-title of the volume, the same of the issue (half title partly cut without loss of text) of the volume, and also with the title page of the work.
