A close friend of Sir John Betjeman, Clark specialised in gentle, nature-inspired verse for young readers. The illustrators were a talented team of Japanese artists specially commissioned by Shufunotomo Co. Ltd. (Tokyo) for this international edition. Working in the vibrant mid-century watercolour and mixed-media style typical of 1960s Japanese children's publishing, they created the book's distinctive, colourful artwork ? each poem illustrated by a different artist for wonderful visual variety.
