Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book dives into the fascinating and complex history of the Wisconsinan Stage, the last major episode of Pleistocene glaciation in North America. The author, a leading expert in the field, meticulously examines the time-stratigraphic classification of this period, presenting a revised framework for understanding the glacial events that shaped the landscape of the Lake Michigan glacial lobe. Through detailed stratigraphic studies and the utilization of radiocarbon dating, the author unveils a more refined understanding of the Wisconsinan Stage, dividing it into five distinct substages: Valderan, Twocreekan, Woodfordian, Farmdalian, and Altonian. These substages represent major periods of glacial advance and retreat, each with its own unique geological characteristics and time-span. The book also introduces a new concept, morphostratigraphic classification, which allows for the analysis of moraines ââ â the landforms left behind by glaciers ââ â based on their surface form rather than just their lithology. This innovative approach offers valuable insights into the dynamic nature of glacial retreat and the complex interplay between ice sheets and the Earthââ â¢s surface. The authorââ â¢s groundbreaking research provides a comprehensive and meticulously researched account of the Wisconsinan Stage, offering valuable insights for geologists, environmental scientists, and anyone interested in the dramatic forces that shaped the Earthââ â¢s past. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book deciphers the geological processes that shaped the landscapes of northwestern Illinois. The author, a geologist, analyzes glacial deposits and related geological formations to formulate a fresh historical perspective on the region during the Pleistocene epoch. Drawing on evidence from gravel deposits, underlying clayey sandy silt, and other formations, the author sheds light on the movement of glaciers, the formation of river valleys, and the development of the region's topography. The author's detailed analysis provides new insights into the geological history of the area and challenges previous assumptions about the timing and extent of glacial activity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book dives into the glacial boundary in southern Illinois, exploring the southernmost extent of continental ice sheets during the Illinoian glaciation. The author reveals how the ice sheet's advance was halted by the Shawnee Hills, resulting in a fascinating interplay of ice and topography. The book delves into the characteristics of the drift, including its thickness, composition, and weathering, providing insights into the processes that shaped the landscape. It also examines the loess that mantles the area, uncovering its origins and significance in understanding the region's geological history. Furthermore, the author sheds light on the glacial lakes that dotted the landscape, formed by the damming of valleys by the advancing ice sheet. These lakes played a crucial role in shaping the topography and hydrology of the area. The book offers a comprehensive analysis of the glacial boundary in southern Illinois, contributing to our understanding of the complex forces that have sculpted the region's unique geological features. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the Cretaceous and Pleistocene deposits in western Illinois, focusing on the Baylis Formation, which holds the distinction of being the first Cretaceous rock formation discovered in the state. The author presents evidence, including mineral compositions, heavy mineral assemblages, and clay mineral compositions, to support the assignment of these deposits to the Cretaceous Period. This book sheds light on the geological processes that shaped this region during prehistoric times and provides valuable insights into the evolution of the landscape. It is a significant contribution to our understanding of the geological history of the Midwest. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a study of weather profiles in relation to the surrounding minerals of glacial tills in Illinois. Through a comparison of profiles developed in situ and profiles comprised of accretion-gley, the author demonstrates that in situ profiles have a significantly lower decomposition rate of feldspars and ferromagnesian minerals, and a greater clay enrichment. An examination of the mineral composition of these profiles reveals that they formed largely in place from chemical decomposition of existing minerals. In contrast, accretion-gley deposits contain a mixture of clay minerals ranging from chlorite to montmorillonite, and a sand fraction composition indicating a less advanced stage of weathering. The accretion-gley parent material is determined to have originated not in place, but from mechanical sorting of a material from which carbonate rocks have been removed. The author concludes that the term 'gumbotil' has not been sufficiently restricted to render it a useful scientific term. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive guide to the Pleistocene Stratigraphy of Illinois, an area with an exceptionally rich glacial history that is the product of multiple ice-age advances and retreats. The author delves into the area's complex geology, which holds importance to both applied science and those with a general interest in paleoclimatology and the planet's long-term changes. Elaborating on the glacial deposits, the book classifies them into four distinct categories based on rock composition, soil type, morphology, and historical periodâ"each with its unique set of named formations and members. These classifications provide a vital framework for understanding this geologically significant region's history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
