The original German has been translated into Italian. The publisher, Ricordi, of Milan, issued a series of Opera texts in petite paperback format, each of which was graced with a beautiful cover illustration. The books were issued with text only, sans music. ********************************** This 1954 book, "Il Franco Cacciatore" ("Der Freischütz"), presents the words to an opera by Carl Maria von Weber: The words were by Friedrich Kind. The text was translated from the original German into Italian by Franco Faccio, and, as stated above, the book was issued without the music. ********************************* It was the cover art that attracted me to this little gem. The cover illustration, printed in deep, midnight-blue, speaks to the artistic zeitgeist that was in the air in midcentury Europe. It seems to be a reproduction of a well-executed linocut. The glassy-eyed bearded head in the foreground and the smaller standing man in the background, combined with the many exuberant lines radiating from the celestial figure at the top strongly suggests the psychological disruption caused by religious or mystical awe. ************************************** Ricordi was, of course, the publisher of many works written for the opera. This is a small paperback reprint from Ricordi. Even with the effects of time impressed on it cover, this little book retains its charm. ************************************** TITLE : Il Franco Cacciatore (Der Freischütz) - Opera Romantica in Tre Atti - From the Opera by Carl Maria von Weber - sans music / TEXT : Friedrich Kind TRANSLATION : Franco Faccio Imprint : G.
