I have always enjoyed old guidebooks or travel books about out-of-the-way places. Here s one, about what at the time of the guidebook (1900), must have been the quintessential remote rural area, in Southwe…st England. Please find: From St. Ives to Land's End by A.G. Folliott Stokes. The sub-title reads: The Cliffs, the Coves, the Moorland, the Prehistoric Monuments, and some of the Birds Animals and Flowers. This small hardcover book (4 ¾ x 7 ¼ inches, 127 pages) was published by Greening & Co. Ltd. of London, dated 1908. The text pages are followed by 64 pages of publisher s adverts featuring their other offerings. The book is bound in color decorated cloth boards with an image of a coastal scene and red and green titles on cover and spine. The book opens with a vintage foldout map showing the Cornwall Coast from Land s End to St. Ives Bay. There are also 25 illustrations including the Frontispiece. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hardcovers are a bit dust-dulled, rubbed and bumped but still reasonably handsome. There is some minor loss of finish along the spine/gutter where the hand of the reader touches the book. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages are generally clean and bright with the exception of some infrequent areas of foxing, typically areas adjacent to plates. There is a small tear to the place where the fold-out area map attaches to the text block. There are two hand-drawn maps on ruled paper left in the book from past owners (between pages 42-43) and this seems to have brought a few pages of foxing. Some of the other glossy b&w photo plates seem to have also promoted foxing but to a lesser extent. Both hinges are intact, but the binding has been repaired where it cracked inside with librarian s tape and now feels relatively sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
