The author was Director of The Edinburgh College of Art 1907-1923. This book deals with the problem of the organization and control of the artist's palette as an instrument of formal rhythmical expression. It places in contrast the increased range and power of the pigments provided by modern chemistry with the uncertain technology of the artist and of art schools. Its main object is the indication of an order, based on colour-intervals, which has become a necessity to the artist as a means of selection and control in pictorial work if he intends to use the full modern range. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition with light bumping to the spine ends and the contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some light soiling and the spine is faded. There is rubbing with some creasing along the top edge and the spine ends are bumped with a tear of about 1/8" on the top front spine corner.
