HARP LAGER SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP, THIRD ROUND, the Showgrounds, Saturday 19 March 1994, kick-off 7.30pm. No. 22, season 1993/94, £1.00. A CENTRALLY PUBLISHED CUP ISSUE: the outer cover is the FAI's own standard Harp Cup cover ? purple, with the Association crest and the FAI Harp Cup device ? wrapped around Sligo Rovers' own 'The Bit o' Red' programme inside. EBS Building Society sponsor the club cover. 1993/94 was the season SLIGO ROVERS WON THE FAI CUP, so this is a tie on the way to the trophy. The manager is WILLIE McSTAY, the Celtic defender, and his notes are written in advance of a trip to Athlone: 'This evening we temporarily put aside the pressures of the League and host old rivals Cobh Ramblers. I wasn't too long in Sligo when I was made aware of the Rovers-Cobh Cup saga in 1983.' The best inside page reproduces the cover of the SLIGO ROVERS v DUNDALK FAI Cup programme of 6 FEBRUARY 1938 ? price twopence ? and tells the story of that 1-1 draw and the replay Dundalk won 2-0 at Oriel Park on their way to the final. It even lists the films advertised in the 1938 programme at the Gaiety and Savoy: 'The Man Who Cried Wolf', 'Charlie Chan at the Olympic' and 'The Great O'Malley'. HARP LAGER CUP QUARTER-FINAL REPLAY, the Showgrounds, Wednesday 5 April 1995, kick-off 7.00pm. No. 22, season 1994/95, £1.00. CENTRALLY PUBLISHED: the FAI's own purple Harp Cup cover reads 'Sligo Rovers (Holders) v. Shamrock Rovers, 1995' ? Sligo were the reigning cup winners ? with the club's 'The Bit o' Red' cover inside. The reason to own it is page 3. Player-manager LAWRIE SANCHEZ ? scorer of Wimbledon's winning goal in the 1988 FA Cup final ? gives his whole column to the refereeing of the drawn original tie at the RDS. He argues the foul on Mark Reid was inside the area, 'a fact confirmed on television later', that the linesman gave the referee no help, and that 'the only two people at the R.D.S. on Sunday who did not think it was a sending off and a penalty were the two whose opinion mattered the most'. He records putting it to the referee afterwards, and the referee replying that he would apologise if television proved him wrong: 'I said I would if I was wrong and I would expect the same if he was wrong.' He then describes the flashpoint at the other end and the 'handbag stuff' that followed. He closes by congratulating Robert Brunton on an FAI National League Under-21 call-up he had to withdraw from, and Eddie Annand, Will Hastie, Johnny Kenny and Robert Bruton on All-Star nominations. CENTRALLY PUBLISHED: the FAI's purple Harp Cup cover, 'Sligo Rovers (Holders) v. Shelbourne, 1995', wrapped around the club's own 'The Bit o' Red' cover. Page 3 is the one to read. Player-manager LAWRIE SANCHEZ writes about semi-final day itself: 'For the winners there is the election of a Final in May and all the anticipation of a great day out. For the losers the feeling of being so close is compounded daily as you read about and follow the exploits of the victors as they prepare for the Final and think "that could have been us". Someone once said you never remember the names of the semi-final losers ? it can be a cruel game at times.' Then he remembers his own: 'I still vividly remember my only other semi-final in 1988. We played Luton at Tottenham. Against the run of play MICK HARFORD ? who ironically now plays for Wimbledon ? put Luton ahead. However justice was done when a DENNIS WISE goal and a JOHN FASHANU penalty put us through to Wembley. Hopefully, I will be feeling the same at 4.30 p.m. to-day.' Official programme for the 2007 eircom League of Ireland Cup Final between DERRY CITY FC and BOHEMIAN FC at the BRANDYWELL STADIUM, Derry, Tuesday 9 October 2007, kick-off 8.00pm. £2.00 / ?3.00. Published by the Football Association of Ireland. A primary document of the reorganisation of Irish football. Chairman EAMON NAUGHTON writes: 'This will be the first such cup final I will have attended in the role of Chairman of the eircom League of Ireland, having been elected to that position recently. I have taken over the position from PADDY McCAUL, who was recently elected Vice-President of the Football Association of Ireland. In the eleven months since the merger between the league and the FAI, we have made great progress. Our league is now in a very healthy state and will continue to grow and expand over the coming seasons.' 'Welcome from the Director' is by FRAN GAVIN, ten months into the job that he would hold for more than a decade: 'Attendances have increased by one-third when compared to the 2006 season - this is due to the terrific work of NOEL MOONEY and his team of Club Promotion Officers. Through the commencement of the Futsal League this season and the A Championship next season, we will see two new levels of competition introduced to the eircom League of Ireland.' He sets out three priorities: 'increasing supporter numbers, improving the facilities for those supporters and increasing the number of elite young footballers playing in the league.' Noel Mooney later became chief executive of the FAI. A further page prints the Republic of Ireland's entire international programme for the rest of 2007 ? senior, under-21, under-19, under-16, amateur, Senior 'B', Defence Forces, Women's senior and Women's under-17 ? twenty-three fixtures in eight weeks. Official matchday programme for the 2019 EA SPORTS Cup Final ? the League of Ireland Cup ? between DERRY CITY and DUNDALK at the RYAN McBRIDE BRANDYWELL STADIUM, Derry, Saturday 14 September 2019, kick-off 8.00pm. ?3. Published by the Football Association of Ireland for its National League. League chairman EAMON NAUGHTON previews both cup runs: 'The Candystripes, the EA SPORTS Cup specialists, will be going into today's game looking to lift their 12th EA SPORTS Cup trophy. DECLAN DEVINE's side have really had to work for their final spot this year after two of the three matches going into extra-time. DAVID PARKHOUSE's hat-trick in the 4-2 extra-time victory against Waterford was the particular highlight of the cup run.' On Dundalk: 'After a tricky second round 2-1 victory over St Patrick's Athletic, the Lilywhites have cruised through the quarter-finals and semi-finals with victories over UCD AFC and Bohemians respectively. There has been a lot of talk about a domestic treble with Dundalk's progress in the SSE Airtricity League and the Extra.ie FAI Cup, so maybe there will be an added pressure on VINNY PERTH's side today.' A feature headed 'Dundalk - The Real Champions' tells the story of the club's purple third kit, launched in aid of the children's hospital at Temple Street, which raised close to ten thousand euro; one local businessman pledged ten euro for every goal MICHAEL DUFFY scored in it and fifty for every PATRICK HOBAN goal. A children's matchday checklist page prints the running order of the evening: teams out 7.54pm, team photograph 7.57pm, kick-off 8.00pm, half-time 8.45pm, full-time 9.50pm. Añadir al carritoSoftcover/Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Official programme for Dundalk v Shamrock Rovers, FAI CARLSBERG CUP SEMI-FINAL, Oriel Park, Friday 8 March 2002, kick-off 7.35pm. CENTRALLY PUBLISHED: the cover is the FAI's own ? a green field-of-play photograph, the FAI Carlsberg Cup device carrying the Association crest, and no club branding at all. Dundalk won the FAI Cup that year, so this is the semi-final of the run that ended a fourteen-year drought. Programme editor Kieran Lawless opens: 'With a combined total of no less than thirty-two FAI Cup wins between them, Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers are undoubtedly the kings of Irish cup football' ? conceding Rovers' twenty-four to Dundalk's eight, and noting that a meeting of 'the two most successful sides in the competition's eighty year history' is always eagerly anticipated. He records that Dundalk's last final was the 1993 defeat by Shelbourne and Rovers' the 1991 loss to Johnny Glynn's late goal for Galway, and is candid about the previous season's humiliation, 'going out to non-League Portmarnock in the third round'. The facing feature is a delight for collectors: reproductions of historic FAI Cup semi-final programme covers, including a Bohemians v Shamrock Rovers issue at twopence carrying its own lottery ? 'DON'T THROW THIS PROGRAMME AWAY! First Prize £1, Second Prize 10/-, Third Prize 5/-' ? and a 1961 Waterford v Drumcondra souvenir at a shilling. The club panel is headed in both languages, 'Dundalk Football Club / Cumann Peil Dún Dealgan'. Official programme for Finn Harps v Kilkenny City, FAI HARP LAGER CUP QUARTER-FINAL REPLAY, Finn Park, Ballybofey, Tuesday 9 March 1999. £1.00. A CENTRALLY PUBLISHED CUP ISSUE, and a different FAI cover from the early-1990s ones: yellow and purple, reading 'HARP LAGER / FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION OF IRELAND / SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP 1999' with the Association crest and the FAI Harp Cup device, wrapped around Finn Harps' own 'The Harps Review' matchday magazine. Finn Harps reached the FAI CUP FINAL that year, so this is a tie on the road to it. Editor Joe Doherty sets the stakes: the winners go to Galway United in the 'élite' televised semi-final for a place in the final at Tolka Park, and Harps supporters 'can rightly say they have travelled the length and breadth of Ireland in this season's competition as they have already played games in Kilkenny, Cork, Dublin and now hopefully Galway' ? having replayed all three rounds so far. He notes it usually takes five games to win the Cup, and this is Harps' sixth. The club directory names manager CHARLIE McGEEVER, chairman Conor Boyce, reserve manager Declan McIntyre and club captain Declan Boyle. A supporters' club page covers a Night at the Races at McElhinney's Bar in Stranorlar and prints the club shop price list ? replica shirt £27, scarves £7, pennants £6 ? a good snapshot of a League of Ireland club in 1999. Official match programme for the 2008 FAI Ford Cup Final between BOHEMIANS and DERRY CITY at the RDS, DUBLIN, Sunday 23 November 2008, kick-off 3.00pm. ?5. Published by the Football Association of Ireland. One of the finals played away from Lansdowne Road while the Aviva Stadium was being built. The cover carries both clubs' players and both managers, PAT FENLON and STEPHEN KENNY, around the Challenge Cup in Ford ribbons. FAI PRESIDENT DAVID BLOOD: 'The FAI Ford Cup has a unique place in the hearts of Irish football fans. It is a tournament with a rich history dating back all the way to the foundation of the State. Many great names have been associated with this trophy and today the players of Derry City and Bohemians will attempt to add theirs to that list as they strive to become the 88th winners of the competition.' On the two clubs: 'Bohemians have had a remarkable season, one which has seen them dominate proceedings in the eircom League of Ireland to the extent that they were crowned champions with some weeks to go. The Gypsies have been the story of the season, yet in many ways the resurgence of Derry City is a tale of equal magnitude. This season saw the return of Derry's adopted son, STEPHEN KENNY, to the club.' He singles out Kenny and PAT FENLON as 'prime examples of the new breed of young, determined and successful managers'. A reference page in itself: the programme prints the COMPLETE ROLL OF FAI CUP WINNERS from 1922, replays included ? St James's Gate, Alton United, Athlone Town, Fordsons, Cork United, Drumcondra, Transport, Cork Athletic, Evergreen United, Cork Hibernians, Cork Celtic and the rest. The official Football Association of Ireland programme for both senior cup finals played at the AVIVA STADIUM, Dublin, on Sunday 6 November 2016. ?5. Fifty-two pages. A DOUBLE PROGRAMME: the IRISH DAILY MAIL FAI SENIOR CUP FINAL ? CORK CITY v DUNDALK, kick-off 15:40 ? runs from one cover, and the CONTINENTAL TYRES FAI WOMEN'S SENIOR CUP FINAL from the other. The cover prints only 'SUNDAY 6 NOVEMBER' with no year; the contents date it firmly to 2016. The cover pictures a Dundalk player in the white Fyffes shirt and SEAN MAGUIRE in the green Cork City shirt. The sponsor's message is unusually good. PAUL HENDERSON, chief executive of DMG Media Ireland, writes as a supporter rather than a sponsor: 'I can recall the thrill of watching my own club, Shelbourne, front up to Deportivo de La Coruna at Lansdowne Road in late summer 2004. That occasion saw the emergence of a certain WES HOOLAHAN who stood head and shoulders above anything else on the pitch. Viewed as a late starter, he followed his dream and scaled his own personal mountain. His achievements will strike a chord for several of the players involved today, not least DARYL HORGAN, a proverbial tower of strength for Dundalk all season (and not only in Europe), who has apparently had tongues wagging and chequebooks rustling in both England and the USA.' He then names the amateur clubs whose cup runs made the season ? Greystones, Crumlin United, Sheriff YC, Janesboro, St John Bosco, Firhouse, Rockmount, Pike Rovers, Bluebell United, Carrigaline United, Ringmahon Rangers, Bandon, Glebe North, Killester United, Cherry Orchard, Midleton, Letterkenny Rovers, Portmarnock, Saint Peter's and Leeside ? who 'must take a bow'. On the men's final: 'Dundalk have travelled down the M1 motorway in search of their tenth victory in the competition and are hoping to complete the League and Cup double for only the third time in their history while CORK CITY ARE LOOKING FOR THEIR FIRST TROPHY UNDER JOHN CAULFIELD having pushed Dundalk all the way over the past two seasons.' Official programme for the 2022 Extra.ie FAI Men's Cup Final between DERRY CITY FC and SHELBOURNE FC at the AVIVA STADIUM, Dublin, Sunday 13 November 2022, kick-off 3.00pm. ?5. Published for the Football Association of Ireland. Fifty-two pages, with a striking cover ? 'DERRY' in red above, 'SHELS' in pale blue below, two players contesting a header between them. The CEO's message is the reason to own it. FAI chief executive JONATHAN HILL writes about the two cup final managers, DAMIEN DUFF and RUAIDHRÍ HIGGINS, both of whom he had worked with in Stephen Kenny's international coaching team: 'Ruaidhrí left us because Philip O'Doherty made him an offer he couldn't refuse to manage his beloved Derry City and already that move is paying off for both men. The Candystripes pushed Shamrock Rovers all the way in the title race this season.' And then, remarkably, he endorses a manager's public attack on his own league's facilities: 'Damien, as we all know, is a man who knows his own mind and is never afraid to speak it. His comments on the state of League of Ireland facilities when he was appointed to the Shelbourne job a year ago last week were a timely reminder to many of one of the biggest challenges facing the League. Those comments, wholly accurate by the way, are fuelling ongoing discussions with Government, national and local.' FAI president GERRY McANANEY writes of 'a carnival atmosphere provided by the supporters from North Dublin and from the North East of the island'. Inside: Route to the Final; a 'No Ref No Game' campaign page; a PATRICK McELENEY feature; 'The Rise of Derry City'; Derry City v Shelbourne 1997; a tribute feature to RYAN McBRIDE and MARK FARREN; 'Reds Resurrection'; a Conan Byrne column; and the induction of MARK RUTHERFORD into the FAI Hall of Fame, with his three league titles at Shelbourne and Bohemians listed. Official match programme for the 2012 FAI Ford Cup Final between DERRY CITY and ST PATRICK'S ATHLETIC at the AVIVA STADIUM, Dublin, Sunday 4 November 2012, kick-off 3.30pm. ?5. Published by the Football Association of Ireland. FAI PRESIDENT PADDY McCAUL sets out the history: 'the 92nd edition of the FAI Ford Senior Cup. This is the Blue Riband competition of Irish football and it dates right back to the beginning of the Association in 1921 so the cup will always be a treasured part of the game in this country.' On St Patrick's Athletic: 'Everybody who supports Irish club football would be well aware of the long wait St Patrick's Athletic fans have had to bring the cup back to Inchicore. There have been several times since that last success in 1961 that they thought they had done it. Most recently when the 2006 cup final took place in the last soccer match played at the old Lansdowne Road and they met Derry City in what turned out to be a memorable if windswept game of football. That 4-3 extra-time victory for the Candystripes was the fourth time Derry had lifted the FAI Ford Cup since their arrival into the league in 1985.' He congratulates Sligo Rovers on the Airtricity League, Drogheda United on the EA Sports Cup and Limerick FC on the First Division; praises LIAM BUCKLEY's St Patrick's Athletic for their Europa League performances; and notes that DECLAN DEVINE's Derry City 'took a while to get into their stride as injuries hit'. The programme also prints the roll of FAI Cup winners from 1922 to 1966. Derry City won 3-2. St Patrick's Athletic finally ended the wait two years later. Sligo Rovers were managed by PAUL COOK. It is also one of the first big occasions at a new ground: 'The Tallaght Stadium first opened its doors in March and today, eight months later, we will put the finishing touches to the 2009 season in this wonderful venue. South Dublin County Council must be congratulated for building this facility, which has already become such an important part of the Irish sporting landscape.'
