Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 12 volumes, 1854-1860. With 135 plates and 14 maps. One of only 300 sets. Fine binding in full brown straight grain morocco, gilt panelled spines, maroon title labels. Marbled edges and endpapers. Small bookseller's label of Beddow, Shiffnal, in each volume. Beddow was the co-publisher of the work along with London publisher John Russell Smith. Text and plates are very clean and bindings are tight. This is an important set. Each volume has the armorial bookplate on the front pastedown of Rev John Brooke of Haughton Hall, Shifnal (1803-81) who drew most of the illustrations for the work. He was responsible for 94 out of the total of 135 plates. John Brooke was vicar of Shifnal from 1831-47. In addition, volume 1 has a pasted-in sepia photograph of the author, Robert William Eyton, and another photograph of Ryton church. Vols 1-7 and 12 have at the end of the volumes about a dozen leaves of narrow ruled paper for notes, although these have not been used. The only fault with this set is that at one time they belonged to an institutional library, and they therefore have the stamp of the City of Nottingham public libraries on the title pages. There are no other library marks. Eyton's Antiquities covers the period mainly from the Norman Conquest to the end of the reign of Henry III, that is from 1066 to 1272, although in some instances Eyton continues the history of a parish for another century or more. The work is regarded as one of the most scholarly county histories ever written. Most sets are bound in half leather and it is unusual to find a set bound in full morocco. A very desirable set with distinguished provenance and attractive shelf appearance. About 13 kg packed. UK postage is included in the default shipping rate.
