Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 5th or later Edition. A lovely early rebind (by Case, Lockwood & Brainard, Hartford), half leather over marbled paper-covered boards, with peach endpapers, of the stated "sixteenth edition" (almost certainly meaning "sixteenth printing," in modern parlance) of Bellamy's "utopian" novel of a future America where no need is seen for money or wages, since the great collective simply distributes to every person what he or she needs, even replacing ridiculous "individual" umbrellas with a vast collective rain shield when it rains. (Whether the trees and flowers consider this a "utopian" solution is not revealed.) An ever-popular collectivist fantasy (see the similarly cashless, wageless society of Gene Roddenberry's initial "Star Trek" -- thank goodness for the "replicator"), though the author might have thought to consider the history of virtually every early American colony, including the Massachusetts Bay, where Gov. William Bradford reported the colonists went hungry for years because they refused to work in the fields, preferring instead to steal other people's crops before they were ripe. But then, in 1623, Gov. Bradford reported that "Instead of famine now God gave them plenty, and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God." What had happened? Why, in 1623 Bradford simply replaced the earlier "utopian" system of collectivism, in which everyone was to take what they needed from the empty storerooms of "the common stock," and instead "gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit." Their "early form of socialism" was "why the Pilgrims were starving," explains historian Richard J. Marbury. But then Gov. Bradford "abolished socialism" in the colony, "replacing it with a free market, and that was the end of famines." Or, to let economist Thomas Sowell summarize (from his book "Marxism: Philosophy and Economics"): "The disjuncture between vision and experience was nowhere better illustrated than in the traumatic post-revolutionary experience of Lenin, as he applied the Marxist vision and watched a whole nation sink into economic chaos and starvation by the millions." Still, this is a significant piece of early American science fiction. Previous owner Cora E. Andrus has dated this copy to top of title page "1889." (Copyright reads 1888.) Top board corners are peeking through the leather. 470 pp. followed by 8 pp. of ads, mostly for other Ticknor & Co. titles, but also including wonderful ads for a bristle-free felt tooth polisher and for the Boston Pants Co., of 111 Chauncy St. This copy now reduced from $600. As with all our items priced $90 or higher, this book will be shipped "signature required.".
