NEW Revised Edition By Publisher. 317 pages. 3/1953; *** ENGLISH LANGUAGE Edition (Translated from the Original 1948 French edition) " She was a wild, untamed creature, entirely at home dancing NAKED for her tribe, or picking the pocket of some unsuspecting soldier. It was written in the stars, the Paprika, the Gypsy Queen, would love only one man, and that man she would torture. Men fought to the death to make her their bride, yet she would have none of them. Everywhere Paprika went she caused laughter and love, death and bloodshed. For Paprika was so beautiful that all men wanted to love her, and all women wanted to kill her. Her story reveals the unbelievably cruel world in which the Gypsies lived. Theirs was a crude life full of hardship, poverty and filth. Yet through it all, they played their sad, tormented music, or drank the whole right long to the sound of women's laughter and the tattoo of dancing feet. A man could have many wives. He could kill, steal, and RAPE. And Paprika, the Blonde Gypsy, ruled them all with her beauty and her intense passion." ** The revealing story of a GYPSY camp, with its wild ORGIES, cruel laws and bloody Duels. ** RARE Title; One of the most popular Esoteric titles in the entire Harlequin Books series. *** 2nd Printing by Publisher (Previous edition was #150 with GGA Photo cover); NEW Revised Edition By Publisher, with FIRST appearance of the new GGA Painted Cover, includes Man in Bondage being WHIPPED. *** Previous owner name in pencil top of front endpage, minor creasing on spine. A NOTE ON THE SCRIPT OF GREED - This volume contains Erich von Stroheim's original ten hour shooting script for the film Greed. This film has only been seen by the public in a severely mutilated version, and it is hoped that this publication will allow the reader to visualise the film as it was originally intended by Stroheim. The history of the film and Stroheim's problems with his producers and distributors are well known, and are fully discussed in the introductory articles. The original script was first published by the Belgian Cinematheque in 1958 in conjunction with their presentation of Greed as one of the Twelve Best Films of All Time. The text was that of Erich von Stroheim's personal copy, preserved after his death by Mme. Denise Vernac. For the present publication the original script was carefully checked against the release version of the film by Joel W. Finler and any additional material incorporated into the text. Significant divergences between the two versions are indicated in the following ways: 1. All scenes contained in the original script but missing from the film are enclosed in square brackets. 2. In many cases whole sequences were removed and new title cards inserted by MGM to fill the breaks in the plot. These are indicated by footnotes. 3. Other alterations in the transition from script to film are indicated by footnotes and/or square brackets. Stroheim's text is reproduced as closely as possible; however much of his technical description was in semi-note form, and this has been expanded and clarified wherever possible without impairing the flavour of his highly individual and idiosyncratic style. It might be noted in this context that the use of American "slang" terms and pseudo-Gennan phraseology in describing the Sieppe family was in fact derived from Frank Norris's novel. Añadir al carritoWhile acting in the Broadway production of "Arsenic and Old Lace," Von Stroheim writes to his daughter-in-law. He refers to the play towards the end of the letter. "We opened last night & as you can see from the criticism it went over allright (sic)." Von Stroheim played the role of the villain, Jonathan Brewster, after Boris Karloff left the play. He addresses his daughter-in-law as "Poopsie." She was the wife of his son Josef (19222002) a sound editor who started out in photography. Von Stroheim offers advice to "Poopsie" after noting his birthday present to her should arrive in time. "I am so glad about your advancement & I hope you'll keep up your interest in your work particulairly [sic] now that you are in the Publicity Dept. I know I just feel that you will make good because you are bright & unspoiled. Just don't associate with punk kids who might get you into trouble. Keep up your interest in photography & continue to be a good mixer. That was one of my many shortcomings. I couldn't mix & make friends." He signs, "Your Dad." Von Stroheim was a masterful if uncompromising director and eventually left Hollywood for acting largely in Europe. Von Stroheim, who emigrated to the US in 1909, continues to be recognized as one of most important 20th century directors especially for his silent era masterpiece, "Greed" (1924).
