Hamer defends the practice as not a sin or a crime, and considerably less harmful than 'gluttony, drunkenness, cheating, lying, swearing, high-way robbery, or treason." Behind (left) a prim, elderly man in a newly dressed wig adjusts his neck-cloth at a small mirror; a coachman in back view puts on his tightly curled wig. .There are also two dogs, two cats, a magpie taking part of a wig from a box on the floor, and another bird in a cage. Above the door (right) are fishing-rods and a creel. On the wall are four prints: a naval battle (framed); a view of the "County Gaol"; an execution scene; and a skeleton fiddling to exulting demons. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Six loose etched and engraved plates on Thomas Dupuy colombier laid paper, folded folio and stubbed. Sheets 51 x 67 cm, edges with red staining and remnants of gilt, with later penciled numbers "16" - "21" indicating sequential placement in the disbound parent volume. Plates vary 35.5 to 36.6 cm high by 59 to 59.5 cm wide, images 32 to 33.3 cm high by 57 to 58 cm wide to the framing lines. Full width inscription space underneath each image with plate title and dedication to the King centering royal eagle coat of arms at the fold, "Dessiné et Gravé d'aprés le Naturel par P.Menant" above platemark lower left corner and "C.P.R." lower right corner. Each sheet has cognate Dupuy watermarks (IHS Holy Name within circle) and countermarks (two bands of letters, mostly open outline, within lozenges, the T and DUPUY separated by a dovecote or "colombier") (see Heawood nos. 1233-5, 2984, 3301-14), supporting a printing date in the 1740's. Generally good to very good, clear impressions, but lacking burr; sheets "19" and "20" relatively strong; sheet "16" light-struck (previously framed) and relatively faded. Condition overall very good, infrequent fox marks, few short closed marginal tears, unobtrusive marginal soiling at edges; rectos unobtrusively stained along vertical center folds mirroring original stubs pasted on folds verso and from old gutter soiling; skinning verso along top edge of each sheet where hinge tape removed, with small losses at top edge on sheets "16" and "20"; sheet "16" has 4 cm closed split at bottom of fold; sheet "19" has small grey spots in blank sky area indicative of original plate foul biting; versos all clean, bright and uniform, not evidencing any other prior condition issues. Originally published in Les Plans, Profils, et Elevations, des Ville, et Château de Versailles, Dessinez et Gravez en 1714 et 1715 (A Paris, Chez Demortain pont Nôtre-Dame, aux belles Estampes, [privilege 1716, but undated later printings]). De Mortain's address and plate numbers (he died in the 1720's) have been burnished from the lower right margins of the plates here, to allow assemblage by other publishers (the "C.P.R." - cum privilego Regis - remains). As may be expected in a later printing, the ephemeral burr of the burin has worn away, leaving the bare engraved or etched lines, which still print distinctly. The plates are as follows: [no. 1, here seq. "16"] "Vuë et Perspective du Château de Versailles, du côté de la Cour"; [no. 2, "20"] " du côte du Parc au Cerf"; [no. 3, "19"] "du côté du Potager"; [no. 4, "21"] "du côté de l'Orangerie"; [no. 5, "17"] "du côté des Jardins"; [no. 6, "18"] "du côté de l'Etang." These plates comprise Menant's entire complement of folded folio "Vuës et Perspectives du Château de Versailles." The choice of paper (one countermark signifies LA/GRAND/RIVE, the Dupuy mill acclaimed the best in France), the stained and gilt edge treatment and the sequence of penciled numbers on the present sheets (ergo preceded by 15 other plates) suggest that they were extracted from a significant volume assembled in the 1740's. (The folded "Plan de Versailles, du petit parc, et des dependances" in Dumbarton Oaks RBR 0-3-5 MOR [there, seq. 16] is dated "M.DCC.XLVI" in the plate. The princely very early BnF Arsenal EST-39, its guide lines still visible, lacks nos. [1] and [5] of the plates here and starts its series of four plates 5, 6, 7 and 8 with no. [2] here as 5.) Laid loose between end blanks of Rodolphe Pfnor, Architecture Decoration et Ameublement Epoque Louis XVI (1865, imperial folio, the text folios and plate broadsheets mounted on stubs, 52.3 x 38.7 cm overall, the paper 51 x 35.5 cm), 44 pp. (text and table of plates), 50 ll. separate monochrome engraved plates, printed on chine laid onto engraved blind-paneled mounts rectos only, and engraved headpieces, opening letters and tailpieces and 23 engraved figures in the text, a fine and luxurious copy in morocco "Bleu de France" (spine slightly sunned).…

Original full calf boards worn and refurbished, re-backed spine with six raised bands forming seven compartments, ruled gilt, with gilt-lettered red morocco lettering-piece in second compartment First edition of Chippendale's groundbreaking furniture pattern-book with all 161 exquisite engravings, the most important book of furniture designs in eighteenth-century England. "The Director ushered in a new era in furniture design and forever changed the way furniture designs evolved and were disseminated." [Greene] The Director is a furniture pattern-book that contains 161 engraved plates after designs by Chippendale of furniture in the Gothic, Chinoiserie, English, and French Rococo styles. It was intended to act as a trade catalog for Chippendale's cabinet making firm, which he started in London in 1748. This landmark large folio of Chippendale's had a great impact on American aesthetics, particularly in Philadelphia where several copies were known to have been in the 1760s. "Chippendale's richly carved style had a pervasive influence on local cabinetmaking." [Heilbrunn] His text was extensively relied upon by furniture-makers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; the present copy bears authentic witness to this use with contemporary annotations from a craftsman at work, as well as fingerspots of varnish on the leaves and a workaday binding. The object's historicity perfectly portrays the trade as it was at the time. Chippendale states in the preface that his intention behind The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director was to assist the one (the Gentleman) in the choice, and the other in the execution of the designs. The term "Chippendale" is often used to describe English Rococo furniture inspired by The Director's illustrated designs. Published by subscription, the book was an immense success and led to wide dispersal of his work. "His designs were plagiarized from at least the early Victorian period by the publisher John Weale, and more or less free adaptations from The Director have been a staple product of commercial furniture makers since the mid-nineteenth century." [ODNB] The publication's reputation helped Chippendale's firm attract many fashionable clients, including the English actor and playwright David Garrick. Two more editions appeared in Chippendale's lifetime: a virtually identical second edition in 1755, and a revised third edition published in installments from 1759-1762. This complete example of the first edition is as issued, with Page 21 numbered 20. The plates are numbered I-CLX in alternating Roman and Arabic numerals, with two of the plates numbered XXV, the first of which is "Chinese Chairs," the second is "Chinese Sopha," as called for.
