2 lettres autographes signées 3 In-4 1838-1843 Ancienne collection Jamar. bon Dans sa première lettre, l'Archevêque de Malines, Engelbert Sterckx décline une proposition de portrait faite par les éditeurs bruxellois, Alexandre Jamar et Charles Hen : « Si j'accordais l'audience que vous me demandez pour M. Baugniet, je serais forcé de revenir sur plusieurs de mes refus, et je devrais sacrifier un tems [sic] que je dois à mes devoirs. » Mais il propose de leur prêter un portrait du pape Grégoire XVI ramené de Rome, pour en tirer une estampe : « Je suis persuadé que si on parvenait à en faire une bonne lithographie, elle serait préférable à tous les portraits de Sa Sainteté, qui ont été publiés jusqu'à ce jour. » Dans la seconde lettre, Sterckx accorde à ses éditeurs la permission de publier deux éditions illustrées du Catéchisme de Malines : « Monsieur Van Hemel, chanoine de la Métropole [.], a bien voulu se charger de vous prêter l'appui de ses conseils, d'examiner les épreuves du texte et les dessins, et d'approuver tout ce qui est destiné à orner cette belle publication. » On joint le frontispice (in-8°) de cette édition du Catéchisme de Malines, orné d'une chromolithographie, rehaussée à l'or. Evêque de Malines (1832-1867), il joue un grand rôle dans l'apaisement des tensions entre catholiques et libéraux qui permit la Constitution de 1831 en Belgique. Il devient cardinal en 1838.
