Karl Spiro (1867-1932) geboren in Berlin, studierte hier, in Greifswald und in Würzburg Chemie, promovierte 1889 in Würzburg zum Dr. Phil und widmete sich dann dem Medizinstudium in Breslau, Straßburg und in Leipzig, wo er 1893 zuum Dr.med. wurde. Seine Assistentenzeit verbrachte er in Straßburg bei Schmiedeberg und Hofmeister, habilitierte sich daselbst 1897 für physiologische chemie und war von 1912-18 o.Hon. Professor in straßburg. 1921 folgte er einem Rufe als o. Professor für physiologische und vegetative Physiologie nach Basel. Von den Arbeiten Spiros, der zu den Führern auf dem Gebiet der Biochemie gehörte, seien die über Mineralstoffwechsel, Eiweißchemie und Gerrinnungslehre sowie seine Studien zur physikalischen und Elektrochemie (Quellungsdruck der Kolloide, Pufferung, Ionengleichgewicht, Rolle der Kolloide bei der Transfusion) hervorgehoben. Eingehend beschäftigte er sich auch mit der Physiologie und Pharmakologie der Lymphbildung und der Harnsekretion sowie mit Fragen der Antiseptik. Mit W.Filehne führte er das von F.Stoltz entdeckte Pyramidon in den Arzneischatz ein.

Auf den Unterschied im Verhalten der Bromid- und Jodionen im Organismus lenkte als erster KÜLZ 1887 die Aufmerksamkeit, als er nachwies, daß nach Darreichung von Kaliumbromid ein Teil der Magensalzsäure durch Bromwasserstoffsäure ersetzt wird, dagegen Jodwasserstoffsäure nur in Spuren im Magensaft anzutreffen ist. FÉRÉ und Mitarbeiter stellten 1892 ferner fest, daß Brom im Gegensatz zu Jod sehr langsam vom Organismus ausgeschieden wird, während LAUDENHEIMER 1897 darauf hinwies, daß nach Einnehmen von Kaliumbromid die Bromidionen die Chloridionen aus dem Organismus verdrängen und sie zum Teil in den Gewebssäften ersetzen. Eingehend wurde diese Frage jedoch 1906 von WYSS, 1910 von ELLINGER und KOTAKE sowie FREY untersucht, die feststellten, daß die epileptischen Krampfanfälle dann wegbleiben, wenn der Halogengehalt des Organismus zu 25 - 35% aus Bromidionen besteht.
