Pages are quite clean and free from marginalia except for a number written at the bottom corner of the title page and a previous owner's name written within the front flyleaf. Dedication bookplate and illustrated red sticker also within the front endpapers. A nice copy. Full refund if not satisfied.

Tips, edges and top/base of spine rubbed with some spotting to cloth. Previous owners name inside front cover, otherwise text appears unmarked. A SCARCE title. William Brimage Bate was a planter, Confederate officer, and politician in Tennessee. After the Reconstruction era, he served as the 23rd governor of Tennessee from 1883 to 1887. He was elected to the United States Senate from Tennessee, serving from 1887 until his death. During the Civil War, following the Battle of Fort Sumter in April 1861, Bate enlisted in a private company in Gallatin, and was elected as its captain. In early May, after Tennessee aligned with the Confederacy, Bate was elected colonel of the 2nd Tennessee Infantry. This unit was quickly dispatched to Virginia, where he saw action at Aquila Creek, and First Bull Run. Transferring to the Western Theatre, he then saw action at Shiloh. He remained in the western theatre, fighting many battles, and eventually surrendered at Bentonville, NC to end ther war.
