No date on the title page, but 1888? Illustrated. Copyright page and preface are both dated 1877. A "Note to Teachers," dated 1888, calls attention to "Supplementary Examples" added to the "present edition." Bound in the original brown cloth with a maroon leather spine. The leather is nicely preserved but for a few tiny chips at the spine ends. Gilt stamping on the spine is still quite bright and shiny. Covers are firmly attached, although worn at the edges. There are 3 names and some pencil notes on the endpapers. The text has a small number of pencil check marks, but NO underlining or margin notes. Keywords: Early American school book. Revised Ediition. Hardcover. Good condition. 421pp.

The interior is uniformly age-toned and generally clean, with a few speckles to endpapers. Small closed tear to half title page. Hinges intact. ** Presumably the seventh of the "Olden-Time" series of publications begun in the Spring of 1886 by the publisher, with materials taken chiefly from from Boston and Salem newspapers. In his introduction, Edward S. Morse describes how the author presents "a quaint collection of facts of interest to the antiquary and the ethnologist." Of particular interest to those interested in New England social life and culture. Author Henry Mason Brooks (1822-1898) would continue this series with books on other topics, including The Old Lottery, Days of the Spinning Wheel, New England Sundays, Quaint and Curious Advertisements, Some Strange and Curious Punishments, and Literary Curiosities.
