Book's two sections each have their own title page and each having a Lippincott 1876 imprint. Book was acquired from the estate of Shakespeare scholar Dr. Giles Edwin Dawson (1903-1994) who worked as curator of books and manuscripts at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. as well as teaching at Catholic University and Howard University. In the curious circumstance of being gifted a book on birds, Giles Dawson was the son of ornithologist William Leon Dawson (1873-1928) who authored three significant ornithological monographs: "Birds of Ohio" in 1903; "Birds of Washington" in 1909; and "Birds of California" in 1923.

Mack, was a German-American composer known mainly for his military march music. Mack composed the music for I'll Give to You a Paper of Pins (1869), with the lyrics credited to "A Lady". He also composed the waltz That Young Man Across the Way (1874). Mack also composed music that celebrated the early popularity of bicycles, including The Velocipede Gallop and The Cyclopede Waltz. Of the 412 marches related to the Civil War in the Library of Congress Civil War Sheet Music Collection, 26 are by E. Mack. According to the Keffer Collection of Sheet Music at the University of Pennsylvania, he was born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1826) and his parents emigrated to the United States when he was 5. At some point, he became blind. In 1844 he entered the Philadelphia Institute for the Blind. Except for a brief stay in New London, Connecticut, he remained in Philadelphia until his death in 1882. As a composer, he mainly wrote dance music and marches for the piano. The Library of Congress copyright deposits include 711 pieces by Mack. Mack's music must have been pleasing enough for the publishers to keep issuing more of it. This music may have been first issues in 1862 as Lieutenant General Grant's Grand March. Frank Henri Klickmann, known professionally as F. Henri Klickmann (February 4, 1885 - June 25, 1966), was a composer, songwriter, musician, and arranger of music from the 1900s to the 1940s. He composed over a hundred songs, including The Vamp, Walkin' the Dog, Kitten on the Keys, Some of These Days, Don't You Remember the Time, and Sweet Hawaiian Moonlight. During the 1920s, he was employed by Jack Mills Music, Inc. In 1921, he became a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. In 1923, Klickmann was hired full-time by Jack Mills Music, Inc. Under Mills, Klickmann published novelty songs, a book about jazz performance (1926), and jazz band orchestrations. He arranged music for the Six Brown Brothers and Eddie Cantor, and composed music for the ukulele and accordion. He also collaborated on a project with cartoonist Rube Goldberg, based on Goldberg's character, Boob McNutt.In July 1919, Irving Mills and his brother, Jack, founded Jack Mills, Inc., which was renamed Mills Music Inc. in 1928. Irving Harold Mills (né Isadore Minsky; 16 January 1894 Odessa, Ukraine - 21 April 1985 Palm Springs, California) was an American music publisher, musician, lyricist, and jazz artist promoter. He sometimes used the pseudonyms Goody Goodwin and Joe Primrose. Although he only sang a little, Irving decided to put together his own studio recording group. He started the group Irving Mills and his Hotsy Totsy Gang with Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Arnold Brillhardt (1904-1998) (clarinet, soprano and alto sax),[c] Arthur Schutt, and Manny Klein. In addition to the normal library markings and attachments, there are some light scattered soil spotting throughout the text. The title page and Prefatory Letter by Charles Darwin are loose, but present with the book. The front hinge is beginning to crack and the binding is beginning to crack in a few other spots, however, there are no loose or missing pages exept for the previously stated. The cover has lots of scuffing. Included toward the end of the book are three plates which show various views of many flowers.

Odyssey Press first printing (per statement "First issued by The Odyssey Press: December 1932 on Volume One copyright page; Volume Two without any statement) - "definitive standard edition . . . specially revised, at the author's request, by Stuart Gilbert" (also as stated on Volume One copyright page). ULYSSES was banned in the United States from a New York legal case in 1920-21 and in the U.K. in 1922 and thus the rear covers of both volumes share same three lines of printed text at their bottom margins: "'In Two Volumes | R.M. 5.60 ~ FRS 36.00 ~ LIRE 28.00 | Not to be introduced into the British Empire or the U.S.A." *** Lacks the fragile slipcase with which the set was issued and both volumes lack (as is often the case) their fragile glassine djs. Paperbacks: H 18cm x L 11cm. Volume i's front and rear covers detached bit Volume II's are intact. Toned paper covers usually described as gray but these lean more towards tan or beige with reddish-brown lettering; some soiling and stains to covers with scuffed/nicks edges and creased corners; spine paper chipped at heads (top 2.5cms) so that title/author lettering is mostly lost but volume #s are extant as are publisher imprints at heels. Soiling/toning to text blocks' top edges and fore-edges; lesser toning to bottom edges. Interior leaves have slight foxing with a few scattered stains and soiling as well as a few creased corners and edge-nicks. Bindings remain reasonably firm. Sold as is for the set would benefit from professional repair to covers/spines. VOLUME I paged as 1-400, [2]. VOLUME II paged as [4], 401-792, [2]. A relatively early edition of Joyce's classic modernist novel which was first published in book form in Paris in February 1922 by Sylvia Beach albeit preceded by partial serialization in the Chicago literary journal "The Little Review" between March 1918 and December 1920 from which the New York banning case arose and, in turn, its related publicity was a component in British government reaction as well.

NOTE: seems to have been edited by Gilbert Beebe, a stalwart proponent of the Old School or Primitive Baptist theology and present at the denomination's September 1832 schism from the Missionary or New School Baptist church at the Black Rock Meeting House (aka the Black Rock Convention or Black Rock Address) in Baltimore County, Maryland, Elder Gilbert Beebe founded the religious newspaper "Signs of the Times" in the fall of 1832 at New Vernon, New York. At least five vols published.
