These developments across West Asia demand constant monitoring and careful analyses. This book is a collection of essays exploring various aspects of the changing security paradigm in West Asia and the regional and international responses. This book is based on the proceedings of the third West Asia Conference (WAC) organised by the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in September 2018. The Conference aimed to deliberate on the emerging security trends in West Asia and elicit views of experts from India and the region. In addition, the WAC discussed the challenges faced by India in devising its policies towards West Asia. First and foremost, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the Indian and foreign contributors for their scholarly insights adding immense value to this volume. Most of the presentations during the conference were duly updated by the authors. We are immensely grateful to Ambassador Sujan R. A decade since the eruption of Arab Spring protests in the Middle East and North Africa, the region continues to confront the primary causes of the popular disenchantment including economic deprivation, bad governance, corruption and limited avenues for political expression. Democratisation, the buzzword in 2011 has given way to debates around conflict management and resolution. Simultaneously, there are mounting economic challenges throughout the region that have been aggravated by the COVID-19 pandemic. But there are some silver linings such as a focus on reforms, greater scrutiny against corruption, demand for better governance, and awareness regarding women empowerment and rights of minorities. The volume, Politics of Change in the Middle East and North Africa since Arab Spring: A Lost Decade?, commemorates the ten years of the eruption of Arab Spring protests. Since the outbreak of the Arab Spring the Middle East is going through a turbulent phase as violence, internal conflicts and civil wars are ravaging a number of countries. Even relatively stable Gulf monarchies are not untouched by the impact of popular demand for change. For India, the Persian Gulf is an extended neighbourhood and the region of vital importance receives scant attention. In the light of the Arab Spring, Iranian nuclear deal and the rise of ISIS, it has become impossible for India to be indifferent to the changing internal dynamics.
