I then proceeded to the southward, among a dense group of islands and rocks not marked in the chart, and on the 29th, at 10 o'clock P.M., my boards captured a brigantine, name unknown, of 200 tons, under Russian colours, and built at Abo in 1852, but so surrounded by rocks and shoals that it was not until 11 o'clock P.M. on the next day they succeeded, after great labour, in bringing her out and alongside. ---Stor Sattunga appears to be the headquarters of the Russian police, who have dogged me about from place to place with wonderful pertinacity, always appearing whenever we landed, and preventing the inhabitants from selling us the smallest supplies even of milk or eggs.' Illustrated with a few engravings and a double-page "Map of Central Africa, Showing H.M. Stanley's Route and Discoveries." This is the true story of Henry Stanley's expedition to rescue Mehmed Emin Pasha (1840-92). Pasha, whose birth name was Eduard Schnitzer, was a physician and German explorer who served as a medical officer under Gen. Charles Gordon in the Sudan from 1876-78. Pasha succeeded Gordon in 1878 as governor of Equatoria, at that time a province of Egyptian Sudan. As a result of the Mahdist revolt of 1882, Pasha was cut off from the outside world. Stanley's last expedition was organized to rescue him. In April 1889, some 1,500 people set out from Lake Albert for the east coast. Along the way, they found the Ruwenzori Range. They also succeeded in proving that Lakes Edward and Albert were linked by the Semliki River, a fact that cleared up one of the last mysteries concerning sources of the Nile. Arriving in December of that year, Stanley and his expedition safely escorted Pasha to Mombasa. But only two years after this book was published, Pasha was murdered while exploring in the region of Lake Tanganyika. Bound in the original red cloth. First American Edition. Hardcover. From the introduction: 'The Collection is remarkable in many respects, more especially from its containing numerous legends of saints and illustrative tales, which must have rendered it a very popular book in the Middle Ages. At the same time these legends in all probability marked it out as an object of mutilation or destruction at the period of the Reformation, when so many memorials of the former religion were destroyed by the zeal of the reformers--a zeal which was especially directed against books used in the service of the Church, or in the private devotins of the people. Fortunately, however, there are preserved in the Manuscript Collections of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the British Museum, and the Lambeth Library, London, complete copies of this series of Homilies, which, though versified, afford a graphic view of the style of popular preaching at the end of the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth centuries. .The present volume is printed from an ancient MS. preserved in the Library of the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. .The sermons are defective, however, in many places; but the portions wanting are supplied in the present volume by extracts from the Cambridge MS. Gg V. 31, and the Ashmolean MS.
