Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. lvii+212+[lvii members list] pages with frontispiece, maps and plans (2 folding), appendices and index. preview of volume xxix from the society laid-in. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to…spine and Hudson Bay Coat of Arms to cover in original jacket. Introduction by John S Galbraith. Publications of the Hudson's Bay Record Society Volume XXIX. Copy 1839 of a limited edition. First edition. Under Simpson s leadership, HBC enjoyed stability and profitability. Despite the yearly Departmental Councils, where senior officers gathered allegedly to discuss business strategy, in reality Simpson ran the show with the authority of a viceroy. His strong connections to the London Committee, as well as their complete confidence in him, allowed the Council of the Northern Department to become the dominant governing body within HBC in Canada. The Council established the regulations for the fur trade, determined furloughs, applied discipline, and recommended promotions and retirements to the Committee in London. The meetings were little more than an opportunity for Simpson to give instructions to his men face to face. Simpson s view of HBC s business was much broader than that of other Company men, who viewed any commercial activity other than the fur trade as somehow suspect. Simpson was interested in pursuing any and all opportunities that would result in increased profits. Simpson s vision of a ship-based trade along the northwest coast, designed to drive away American traders, resulted in the commissioning of S.S. Beaver, the first steamship in the Pacific northwest. Alongside other senior officers and members of the Company s London Committee, Simpson set up the subsidiary Puget Sound Agricultural Company to focus on the local production of foodstuffs, which would supply HBC s needs and reduce operating costs. In 1838, Simpson travelled to St. Petersburg, Russia, along with HBC Governor Sir John Henry Pelly to negotiate a deal with the Russian American Company. The contract saw the Russians lease the Alaskan Panhandle (southeastern Alaska that runs along the Pacific) to HBC in return for the provision of fresh foodstuffs to the Russians headquarters at Sitka. Condition: Head corners bumped else better than very good in a near fine jacket.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First UK Edition. First UK edition, first impression - translated from the French by John A. Spaulding and George Simpson. Originally published in French as "Le Suicide" in 1897. ***Near fine in dark-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and publisher'…s device to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Slight marks to the fore-edge of the page block. Interior pages clean with no creases or tears. ***In a very good typographically printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped but has an additional publisher's 30/- net price sticker on the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete, with just slivers of loss at the head and tail of the spine and corner tips. Some slight creasing to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. No tears or chips. Dustwrapper nice and clean (please see scans). ***223mm x150mm. 404 pages including a detailed Index, plus a 16pp publisher's catalogue for The International Library of Sociology and Social Reconstruction at the back of the book. ***'David Émile Durkheim (15 Apr 1858 - 15 Nov 1917) was a French sociologist. Durkheim formally established the academic discipline of sociology and is commonly cited as one of the principal architects of modern social science, along with both Karl Marx and Max Weber. Much of Durkheim's work was concerned with how societies can maintain their integrity and coherence in modernity, an era in which traditional social and religious ties are much less universal, and in which new social institutions have come into being. Durkheim's conception of the scientific study of society laid the groundwork for modern sociology, and he used such scientific tools as statistics, surveys, and historical observation in his analysis of suicides in Catholic and Protestant groups. Durkheim's first major sociological work was "De la division du travail social" (The Division of Labour in Society) (1893); followed in 1895 by "Les Règles de la méthode sociologique" (The Rules of Sociological Method). Also in 1895 Durkheim set up the first European department of sociology and became France's first professor of sociology. Durkheim's seminal monograph, "Le Suicide" (1897), a study of suicide rates in Catholic and Protestant populations, pioneered modern social research, serving to distinguish social science from psychology and political philosophy.' (Wiki) ***'How can difference in the rate of suicide be explained? It was always possible to explain the incidence of suicide--why one person rather than another committed it--but the problem of why one country has a higher rate of suicide per thousand of the population than another, why one social class or religious group has a higher rate than another, was never adequately explained before Durkheim wrote his book. It was perhaps his most important work, serving for successive generations as a model in social theory. Its influence on the social sciences has increased with years.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***First impression of the first UK edition - extremely hard to find now in the original dustwrapper. A scarce title in first edition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
