King 1925 second edition (Ist published 1919). From the Preface. ' Nothing in the book excited more attention and hostile comment than the suggestion on page 41 of the introduction that when the scales fell from the eyes of the people of Europe they would demand that their governments should burn enough paper money to restore their currencies to par with gold. Taking this literally as a prophecy I admit some disappointment. The nations have shown themselves on the whole stupider than I expected, and the scales stuck on their eyes so long that simple restoration by reduction became impossible in many cases. In the others, including that of Great Britain, Australia and South Africa, the process of restoration has been far to prolonged with many unpleasant results, among others the fact that it is now not only the dollar which the pound cannot "look in the face", but the German mark and several other European currencies which are at this moment at par with gold and will remain there unless their managers once more forget the doctrine of due limitation of supply. But taking the suggestion of burning paper money is advice rather than prophecy no one can say that it has not been amply justified by subsequent history. The countries which limited and reduce their currencies have won through with far less damage than those which failed to do so'.This book will be POSTED AT OUR STANDARD RATES FULLY INSURED (UK) ONLY .
