A genuine 1776 printing taken from the authoritative Complete Collection of State Trials. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse, the State Trials series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice, authority, and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand, bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible, some pages display watermarks, and the paper varies subtly in thickness, all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. 1710. (Leatherbound) Very good. xiii, [3], 364pp, [4pp adverts]. 12mo. Bound in period full leather. Top and bottom board blindstamped with decorative center-piece panel. Similar to the "basic pattern" of the early-18th century describe by Pearson in English Bookbinding Styles, 1450-1800" (see p.77, 3.84); similar in their base…style to the basic panel stamps of the mid-16th century (p.56, 3.34). Contemporary restoration (presumably from the second-half of the 20th century). Volume housed in protective red-cloth slipcase. From the library of noted Cambridge scholar H. G. Fletcher III, with his bookplate in the inside cover of slipcase folder which houses the volume. New leather spine, aged to appear congruent with the binding, five 5 raised bands, simple unordained compartments; new head / foot bands; original leather laid over boards. Original leather with rubbing, Runners once with decorative gilt decoration, largely lost due to rubbing. Some faint notations in pencil to EPs; simple letter 'G' in early ink at head of ffep. General light age-toning and relative stiffness to textblock, as expected with such a volume from the early 18th century. Starting at p.2 / 3, entirely secured by re-bind. With two ALS bound in: 1) Order for payment of $130 to Sir Phillip Musgrave, dated 17 Jan.1676, signed by Danby; 2) Order for payment of $2000 to Sir William Trumbull "for his Mats. Secret Service without Acct.", dated 8 July 1695, signed by Godolphin (then head of the treasury); bound in at PP18 / 19 and 354 / 255, respectively. Textblock generally clean, without notable age-toning or foxing; free of marginalia, underlining, or any other such blemishes. This is the famous vindication attempt published by Leeds (1631-1712) two years before his death, having been in semi-retirement since 1699. It publishes correspondence with Montagu, William of Orange, Sir William Temple, Lord Sunderland, Brisbane, Hyde, and the Early of Godolphin, dealing with Danby's 1678 impeachment. The eventual publication of Danby's letters to Montagu by the Historical Mss. Commission reveled, however, that the letters had been garbled for the purpose of publication, several passages being omitted and others altered by his own hand.

Both Dukes are significant; the first was a leading Tory politician and one of the 'immortal seven' who invited William of Orange to England, and the second was a naval adviser to Peter the Great of Russia. The present item is sig…ned 'Carmarthan P:', which would seem to suggest it is the signature of the 2nd Duke, Peregrine Osborne, but the Oxford DNB states that he became Marquis of Carmarthen a few months after the present item, on his father being made Duke of Leeds on 4 May 1694. The item is in poor condition, on aged, worn and discoloured paper, with chipping to edges, damage at top right, and a spike hole at the foot. It is however a scarce survival and a quite early example of a 'drawn note' or cheque (one of the earliest in existence was drawn on Morris and Clayton of London around thirty-five years before, in 1659). On one side of an 18.5 x 10.5 cm piece of wove paper, with the top edge rounded into an arch. Reads: 'Febry. ye 9th. 1693/4 / I desire you to pay to the bearer Willm. Vernon the Sume of one hundred pounds and place it on my account / Carmarthen P: / To Sr. Francis Child and partner'. See Image.

Our copy lacks the title and the last pages 329-335. We think it a pity to split up this collection formed immediately upon publication of these trials. The book shows no provenance marking except for a name ''P. Parston'', perhaps not contemporary, written in the corner of the first fly leaf.
