This is No. XI of The Hudson's Bay Company Series, a sub-series within The Publications of the Champlain Society series. Edited by E. E. Rich with assistance by A. M. Johnson. Introduction by E. G. R. Taylor. This volume contains transcriptions of letters by or relating to the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) that were originally written from about 1680-1687. The Preface clarifies that discrepancies in the original letters' dating system means that some of the transcribed documents herein date as early to 1679 and as late to 1694. The Preface also describes the letters in this volume as being a companion collection to the minutes of HBC. Front colophon: "Five Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume have been printed. Fifty are reserved for Editorial purposes. The remaining Five Hundred are supplied only to Members of the Society and to Subscribing Libraries. This copy is No. 356.".

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. lxii357+[xv members list] with tables, appendices, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 ½" x 6") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering and company insignia to spine. Edited by E.E. Rich, Assisted by A.M. Johnson. Introduction by K G Davies. Hudson Bay Record… Society Volume XX. Limited members First Edition number 1940. The editors of the Hudson's Bay Record Society have returned in their twentieth to the London office and to a continuation of the Letters Outward from the Committee to the Bay, with an introduction by K. G. Davies, fellow of New College, Oxford. To compare this volume with volume XI and the three volumes of Minutes so far published is to recognize the "grand design" of the series, now taking definite shape and promising a scope and variation exciting to contemplate. Five introductions covering the history of twenty-five years of Hudson's Bay, treated chronologically, might be expected to provide a comprehensive study of the Company, but at the risk of monotony. Monotony becomes impossible and the field is immeasurably broadened when subjected to the differing viewpoints of the scholars so carefully chosen by Mr. Rich. Mr. Davis is particularly concerned with the Company's problems of trade and finance during these years of gloom in its affairs. Anglo-French rivalry in the Bay formed the background for the period, with actual war beginning in 1689 and lasting throughout the years covered by the volume, disastrous for the Company, whose further loss of New Sevem and Fort York to Iberville was only mitigated by the final recapture of Albany and the temporary reoccupation of York. Mr. Davies stresses the weakness of the Company's position owing to the lack of government support and the manpower shortage caused by war. Its royal charter too was in jeopardy following the Revolution of 1688 but it was more fortunate than the East India and Royal African companies in securing unconditional, if limited, parliamentary confirmation. Condition: Unread with pages yet to be separated else near fine.

No. XIX in The Publications of the Hudson's Bay Record Society series. Edited by E. E. Rich who was assisted by A. M. Johnson. This volume contains a transcription of Eden Colvile's letters sent from Canada to Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) officials in London. Eden Colvile (1819-1893) was an English businessman and governor of HBC. He was the son of Andrew Colvile who had worked as Deputy Governor of HBC. Eden took over the duties of another HBC governor, George Simpson. As HBC governor, Eden was tasked with handling a variety of conflicts including racial and cultural tensions between the different residents of Red River Colony in Rupert's Land, the Guilleume Sayer trial, and Foss-Pelly trial. Following the main collection of Eden's correspondence to London is a collection of his letters addressed to Simpson. In both collections of his letters, Eden writes about a variety of subjects such as HBC administrative matters, noted HBC officials, and residents and politics of Red River Colony. In his Introduction, Morton writes about the general sociopolitical and racial dynamics in Red River Colony, the agricultural prospects and difficulties in the Colony, and notable individuals associated with Red River Colony. Morton discusses ethnic groups in the region such as the Metis, French Canadians, and Kildonan Scots. He addresses the importance of religion among various groups and tensions between Protestants and Roman Catholics. Morton paints a detailed picture of daily life in Red River Colony such as observed social customs, animals that could be raised there, and crops that could withstand the brutal winters of the region. Front colophon: "This copy is No. 658 of a limited Edition which is issued only to subscribers to the Hudson's Bay Record Society.".

This is No. II in the Hudson's Bay Company Series, a subset within The Publications of the Champlain Society series. Edited with an Introduction by E. E. Rich. Rich was assisted by R. Harvey Fleming. This volume contains a transcription of Colin Robertson's letters dating from September 1, 1817-September 1822. Transcriptions of many supplementary letters and documents are also included. Colin Robertson (1783-1842) was a Scottish-Canadian fur trader and politician. He worked for both Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company who were fierce rivals in the fur trading industry. Robertson's letters offer an insider's look at both companies and their day-to-day activities. Given the dates of his letters, they also provide invaluable historical context behind the merger of HBC and North West Company in 1821. He worked for HBC until 1840 when he retired from the industry. Robertson also served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Two Mountains from 1841 until his passing in 1842.
