In the months leading up to the 2020 presidential election, Portland made national news with nightly social justice protests, often met with violent response by counter protestors and law enforcement. Though frequently regarded as a progressive hub, Portland has a long history of racial inequality and oppression, and the citys entrenched divisions gained new attention during the Trump years. The photos in Protest City present a visceral visual record of this significant moment in Portlands history. The majority of the 121 photos included in the book were taken between May and October 2020, but the end of the collection is supplemented with photos from protests in late 2020 and early 2021 around various related issues, including the Red House on Mississippi and demonstrations on January 6 and 21. Dundons striking photos recreate the immediacy and impact of the protests. The text includes a chronology and statement from the author; a foreword by Donnell Alexander; and a historical introduction by Carmen Thompson. The publisher and author would like to thank Magnum Foundation, Documentary Arts, and the Economic Hardship Reporting Project for their generous support of this publication. Additional funding has been provided by Furthermore: a program of the J. M. Kaplan Fund. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Riveting point-and-shoot photographs of Portland's signs, streets and citizens"Our setting is Portland, Oregon," begins Rian Dundon (born 1980), in his foreword to Passenger. "The photographer is a 42-year-old divorced American dad. His family and city are splintering, but any feelings of regret are curbed by the thrum of money and capital moving the wheels underneath." Using his trademark point-and-shoot Fujifilm XF10, Dundon has included here nearly 100 images of Portland and its inhabitants. The XF10 generally takes more time to operate than a single-lens reflex or an iPhone, which, in the artist's words, "slows things down." The resulting photographs, whether depicting an eerily lit bus interior, a graffiti-laden store window or the cops and protestors he documented so effectively in his previous book, Protest City, offer, in the words of the New Yorker's Luke Mogelson, "curated portraits and scenes of unusual intimacy." Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
