Añadir al carritoNo Binding. Condición: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper pamphlet. Text printed in black ink. Formerly bound together with other tracts. No date, circa 1863. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." Twenty pages, complete. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning and splitting and slight chipping along spine. A Very Good copy. This pamphlet is No. 39 in a series of pro-Union articles issued by the Loyal Publication Society of New York. The Society was founded in early 1863 to help boost morale for the Union cause through the circulation of pro-Union pamphlets after the Union had suffered a series of defeats in the American Civil War. This pamphlet contains an essay by Henry Drisler in which he argues against the claims made by John H. Hopkins in his essay, Bible View of Slavery. Henry Drisler (1818-1897) was an American classical scholar and abolitionist. John H. Hopkins (1792-1868) was an American theologian, the first bishop of the Diocese of Vermont, and 8th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the United States. Hopkins's essay, Bible View of Slavery, was controversial for defending slavery and claiming that slavery is not a sin. Drisler became well-known for refuting Hopkins's claims using the Bible as his only source in his counterargument presented herein. In his essay, Drisler begins by addressing the widespread criticism leveled at Hopkins's views. He says that Hopkins's attempt to justify slavery "sets itself in defiant opposition and raises its rebellious hand against the duly constituted authorities, has called forth the indignant protest of the noble Bishop of Pennsylvania ." Hopkins erroneously believed that the conversion of slaves to Christianity justified their enslavement, that black people should not have freedom because they are an "inferior" race, and that Noah declared that black people would be fated to be slaves. Drisler then addresses various parts of Hopkins's claims in order to counter and dismantle them. First, regarding the reference to slavery in the Book of Genesis, Drisler argues that the proclamation of slavery by Noah against Canaan only applied to specific children of Ham. Drisler also argues that any dictates of slavery were under Mosaic law which he says is no longer in effect. Drisler also notes that the Israelites, after being enslaved by the Egyptians, were divinely rescued from the "land of bondage." Drisler refers to several verses in Scripture to conclude that the proclamation of slavery in Genesis was directed toward white people or at the very least, a race that was not of African descent. He then references verses from the Gospel to show that Christ and the new Christian laws overwrote the dictate that the race of Canaan shall be enslaved. Drisler underscores the redemption one receives when they become a Christian, "How can any Christian man, how can any Christian minister, dare to question the universality of Christ's atonement?" He says that Christ's atonement supersedes Noah's proclamation of slavery upon Canaan. Drisler contends that any supposed proof of a divine sanctioning of slavery relies upon Hebrew laws (which he says are no longer in effect) and were only applied to specific individuals or "heathen nations." Drisler also counters interpretations of the Tenth Commandment claiming that it permits the owning of human beings as property. In this Commandment, a man's wife is referred to alongside inanimate property he owns. Drisler explains that the pro-slavery or literal interpretation of the Commandment cannot be true because if it were true, that would mean a husband's wife is his property. Drisler also notes that Christ and the Apostles never owned any slaves and there is no sanctioning of slavery in the New Testament. He says Christ's teachings are incompatible with slavery. He also notes several verses from Scripture denouncing slavery. Drisler also says that greed reintroduced slavery into Western civilization.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book propels readers into the heated battle over slavery that raged in 19th-century America, particularly regarding its justification through the lens of the Bible. The author, a respected bishop, argues that the supposed biblical sanction for slavery, especially as it existed in the Southern states, is a gross misinterpretation of scripture. By examining key passages from the Old and New Testaments, the book dismantles the arguments of slavery's proponents, exposing the flimsy foundations of their claims and revealing the true spirit of compassion and equality that permeates the Bible. Thought-provoking and meticulously researched, this book challenges conventional interpretations of scripture, shedding new light on the role of religion in shaping societal attitudes towards slavery. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
