The author's lament for the thoughtless destruction of irreplaceable national treasures and customs has many resonances in today's post-industrial world. Have we now gone too far? The author certainly thought so in 1910. His nightmares, however, were not high-rise flats and motorways, but iron bridges and the 'modern French style with sprawling gigantic figures and bare limbs hanging on the porticoes'. Fred Roe's delightful pencil drawings offer the most effective and atmospheric visual descriptions of a wide range of architectural and cultural jewels.
